11.2 ounce bottle. Pours a clear, very dark brown with an off-white head. I decanted the bottle and left some yeast in the bottle. The aroma is of Belgian esters, dark malt and alcohol. The flavor is of dark french pastry with a carbonation bite. This is a fine example of a Belgian Dubbel. Note that it does not have the prune/raisin/cocoa taste that most American imitators have. Well done!

(Best before date: April 2017, so probably brewed April 2014?)
Dark amber with a fairly big, medium lasting head.
Nose: Initially dark malt. Takes a while to open up, then come prunes, dates, raisins and dark treacle, honey and over brewed tea,
Taste: The arrival is creamy with rich carbonation and tasty dark malt. The mid palate is fairly dry and malty. The exit malty and with slight hops bitterness.

Zeer degelijke bruine trappist. smaken van cacao, chocolade, winters warme alcohol, beetje banaan.
Gaat vlotjes binnen.

I tried the Westmalle dubbel last week at a restaurant. Compared to St. Bernardus Prior 8, the Westy had more fruitiness to it--which is good--but, it negated that good aspect by having a bitter aftertaste that felt like medicine. So based on this bitter medicine-like aftertaste, I much prefer the Prior 8 over this beer.

Appearance: nice, beige head, brown, opalescent
Aroma: ripe banana, chocolate, cocoa and after warming a hint of alcohol, rather pleasant
Taste: sweet, ripe banana, chocolate, cocoa and after warming some alcoholic notes, but nothing unpleasant.
The beer is extremely smooth.

Wow. Finally something different. Aroma reminds me of some flower, not sure which exactly. Taste: bitter almonds, apple seeds, bananas. It is quite sweet, fruity but in perfect balance. Not much bitterness. Very different and very nice. The only disadvantage is that it is quite expensive in UK but it is still worth the price.

Bottle from the LCBO. Surprisingly I've never rated this, even though I've had it many times. Pours a deep ruby red with a tan head. Massive aroma of toffee, plums, banana, some toasty malty notes. Tastes of plums, cherries, toffee, maltiness, some dry woodiness. Trappists just know what they are doing.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2017 Aromas of overripe banana, cola and dried cherries. Tastes the same plus some subtle dark chocolate and slight bitterness. Quite carbonated for an ale. Balanced bitter-sweet and very long dry finish.

Uitstekend.
