4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at Sunset Grille and Tap, Allston, MA. Aroma is malted with nice caramel tones covering up a little vanilla. Hardly any alcohol noticeable. There are some notes of hoppiness there as well. Doesn’t look much different than other offerings - a nice amber with the thinest of heads that stays put. Taste backs up the malt, caramel, and vanilla with a nice heady dose of woody bourbon and there’s the alcohol heat. Very nice. Body is medium and sticky sweet with a little carbonation. Finish is lasting. The sweet vanilla tastes stays around longer than expected. I had forgotten how good this beer really is. I haven’t had Insanity in about a year but I will be picking some more up shortly.
From Oct 2007
I got this one in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks John!
This pours from 12oz bottle a cloudy, no, murky brownish amber with a nice thick head of foam(for the style) and some good lacing.
After a few minutes the foam dissipates completely but that's not unusual for the style and hence, no points will be lost for that. Hey, I like murky looking beers as they *usually* turn out to be above average tasting beers.
The smell is of caramel malt, fruit, some citrus, and slight alcohol.
The taste is very malty on first sip. Big caramel malt tickles my palate and almost overwhelms it. Not a bad thing, mind you. There's some hop presence in the background that stops it from getting too sweet for my liking and I'm noticing some bready tones that gives it an earthy flavour especially near and through the finish. The alcohol is there all right but it just adds some warming during and after the swallow and doesn't detract from the taste at all. This is a *very* smooth sipper; kind of reminds me of some English style BWSAs and I'm a big fan of those. Edit: This must have been reclassified as an English BWSA since my review. Good show!
The mouthfeel is nice and thick and the carbonation is lightly done. Dang, I can't get over how smooth this is. I don't think I'd want to age this son of a gun as it's just right the way it is.(unless it *has* already been aged...I don't see any dating on the hard to read writing on the bottle)
A word about the drinkability...it's hard to put down the glass. Dangerously drinkable because it is almost silky smooth and I hardly notice the warming that I mentioned earlier.
Bottom line: This is a world class example of the style that I'd get again and can only highly recommend. Thanks again, John, for giving me the opportunity to try this winner from Weyerbacher! Emeister84 (2580) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - OCT 22, 2017
On tap at World of Beer (Charlottesville, VA). Aromas of caramel, red berries, red grapes, oak, vanilla. Clear bronze with a mostly fading off-white head. Light sweetness, light booze. Full bodied. TH28 (478) - - OCT 20, 2017
12oz bottle. 11/28/16 bottle date. Appearance: Dark brown with some amber hue, hazy, with literally no head. Pours still.
Aroma: Caramel and bread crust maltiness. A touch of dark cherry, oak, and vanilla. Fairly restrained
Taste: Rich caramel maltiness and strong woody oak dominates. Toast and dark fruit emerge on the back end, with a cinnamon and vanilla on the swallow. Bitterness builds to a moderate high
Mouthfeel: Heavy bodied, almost syrup like, with low carbonation
Finish: Slighty spiced rich malt sweetness lingers. Touch of dark fruit
Overall: The appearance is flat and aroma subdued, but a really pleasant and complex flavor that balances caramel, bead crust, dark cherries, cinnamon, and a touch of vanilla. Drinks well and doesn’t show any harsh alcohol for a beer of this strength. Great for a cool winter night VRH (66) - Georgia, USA - OCT 5, 2017
2013 keg on tap at Beverage World. Spiced apple, nutmeg, balsa wood, apple skin, raisin, caramel, mint, almond. Delicious! koleminer20 (3978) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - SEP 17, 2017
12 oz bottle shared by ebone1988. 2016 vintage. The pour is a dirty ruby brown with a thin light tan ring of head and a spot of lace as it hangs around. The aroma is really strong. There is a big alcohol right up front with a sweeter malt and a light caramel. Not a lot going on, but it's interesting. The flavor is much of the same. Watery caramel and a strong malt with a heavy alcohol. There is a toffee sweetness to it that balances out well. The mouth feel is sharp and medium bodied with a softer carbonation and a lingeringly bitter toffee malt and alcohol lingering on. This is still hot as hell. Damn. 6 4 6 4 14

This beer is too strong for my taste. Too much bourbon alcohol dominates and does not allow the rest of the beer to come through. There is taste of dark fruits and figs in the background. But the alcohol suppresses and overwhelms the other ingredients. Too bad!
Tastes of caramel, brown sugar, a bit of a leathery, farmy smell, and some cigar tobacco at the back of it. Delicious. BroadestTom (446) - Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 7, 2017
Aroma caramel, raisin, vanilla, woody,
Appearance brown, hazy, cloudy, minimal head, tan foam,
Taste medium sweetness,
Palate full body, thick feel,
Over after almost 2 years this beer has smoothed out a lot. A thick mouth feel with lots of dark fruits in the taste. The alcohol is more of a warming feel. I would suggest this beer to a friend. gephross100 (943) - Bellaire, Texas, USA - APR 26, 2017
