A - pours a sort of honey orange amber with low off white head. S - aromas of caramel, wet musty oak, vinegar, light booze and wine barrel aged goodness. M - medium body with a nice comfortable tartness. Full palate. Rich and tart up front, drier sweeter end. T - tastes follow the nose well, this is a consecration clone. How: Bottle 750ml corked & caged, consumed when many months of age. Bottle from my man dmac, thanks a lot Dave.
The look: Cloudy rust-color body topped by a small beige head.
In long: Nose is loaded with barrels, awkward oak clashing with sour cherries and burnt orange peels. The beer is aged in pinot noir barrels but somehow it smelled a bit bourbonny to me, but mostly just pure oak. Taste is intense, this is not an easy beer to drink, at least not the batch I had. Sour cherries, a lot of tannins, overwhelming oak, acidity (sensation of alkaline battery on the tongue), dark grapes skin, caramelized almonds, vinegar, dirty funk. The beer is a bit sweet but it goes pretty much unnoticed with the sweetness buried in this avalanche of abrasive flavors. Very active carbonation. This is a very very brutal beer with very low drinkability, after an hour I finally gave up on it and drained poured the rest. I’m puzzled by the mostly good ratings on this thing, there might be big variations between the different vintages. If the actual Rapture is as lame as this beer then Jesus will return to earth to take all the true Christian believers to a continental Sunday brunch buffet before the end of thyme.
Really nice beer, not super sour, tropical and some acidic pineapple type notes.
