3.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured deep amber, with a bubbly white head. Faint aroma of fresh baked bread. Taste is caramel and rye bread, with a dry finish. Well-balanced.
Draft at Gre Lodge Pub with Linh, Vi, Thi, Ken and Nicca. Pours a deep mahogany with no head and minor lacing. Aroma is toffee, maple, caramel malt and sweet sugar. Mouthfeel is on the thinner side of medium with notes of oak, sweet maple, toffee, caramel candy and light "round" malt flavor. This sort of reminds me of a muted base beer for a barley wine. Draft. Clear ruby amber color, tan head. Aroma of burnt caramel on burnt toast with candied spirits, sort of like Drambuie. Taste is sweet and stcky burnt citrus and buttersotch. Nice character and complexity. cpetrone84 (1810) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 11, 2013
Pour is transparent blood red with a tan head. Nose has a messy grain and sweet malt. Candied sugar, roasted caramel and brown sugar, and some black cherries. Taste is messier grain and a faint metallic note. A touch less sweetness, cooked caramel and brown sugar. Medium body, lower carb, chewy chalky finish. ineedbeer (2153) - Oakland, California, USA - MAR 4, 2013
Aroma is very malty with bread notes, burnt toast, caramel and toffee. There is some burnt sugar notes and a lot of dark fruit esters. The dark fruit includes raisins, plum, prunes and fig. Light herbal hop aroma.
Pours a fairly still hazelnut brown with bit of a burnt amber highlights. Thin dark tan head that quickly recedes to the edges where it persists slightly.
Flavor starts with quite a bit of caramel of varying darkness, some toffee and burnt toast in the flavor. Mid palate you get dark fruit, especially raisin, prune and plum. The finishing palate is bitterness which is a bit harsh and doesn't blend well with the fruit notes. A lot of hot alcohol which lingers with the bitterness and isn't very pleasant.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with low carbonation. The astringency is moderate and the alcohol warmth fairly high.
Overall this beer really isn't very good. Maybe it would get better with age an oxidation (it probably would), but right now it is hot, astringently bitter and the malt is too bright.

On tap at Capone’s. Poured a deeper amber color with an off white head. Floral, some breadiness, caramel, and some dark fruits. Jesterdeal (1985) - Marlton, New Jersey, USA - FEB 14, 2013
Aroma of dusty overripe banana and slight molasses. Pours deep brown with a small lingering head. Taste is initially grape soda, crab grass and an earthy dirt taste. The dusty altbier tones are there with some weird fruit notes. Altbiers are boring. DeputyAndy (636) - Ambler, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 9, 2013
Draft at Capone?s. Dark brown/red pour with a brown head. Smell is faint with notes of dark malts. Taste is drawn out. Some faint sweet cherry flavor mixing with brown sugar. Thin mouthfeel actually helps the flavor. Alcohol well hidden. Good. boxofrane (2553) - Spring City, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 7, 2013
