Rated from old notes. Disappointed to hear this one was retired as it was an old standby for me back in the late 90s. Poured dark copper with a creamy head. Taste was caramel malt, nuts, and a light touch of honey. Good stuff.

Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Pours an amber color with a modest off-white head. Malt and caramel aromas present. Slightly sweet and bitter on the palate with a little pepper on the finish. Nothing special.

I have no idea how old this bottle is, but when in Rome...12 oz bottle into a wine glass. A: Pours a dark ruby color thats in no way pale. About one finger of off-white colored head is formed, only to fade away quickly due to poor retention. No real lace. S: Wow, this is VERY sweet. Tons of dark fruits inhabit the aroma, with only a hint of oxidation to break up the monotony. Honestly, its a pleasant nose, just not that complex. If the bottle didnt say "pale ale", Id wonder if it were an old ale instead (its certainly old in more ways than one...) T: It tastes dangerously similar to prune juice - cripes, this is sweet. There is some mild oxidation, but nothing too horrible. The finish is a combination of chocolate and mineral water. Some decent qualities exist, but the whole package just seems...off. M: Despite the sweetness, the dry finish is honestly kind of unpleasant, which says nothing about how unfitting the sweet and dry get along on the palate. Carbonation is almost nonexistent. O: A truly great beer can stand the test of time (unless theyre hoppy, natch), and this hasnt. If you still see this at your Neighborhood Liquor Store and youre considering picking this up, dont do it! Get something else instead.

This one of my first go-to beers years back. Malty caramel flavor. Little hop presence. Not had the British version yet.

Ive tried both the British and American versions and the American version is far better. This version is a copper coloured beer, darker and less cloudy than its British counterpart. Aroma is sweet malt, and floral hops, the hops more pronounced than the British version. The flavour is fuller and more defined in this version with a definite malt sweetness.

Hah! Found my rating from working back at woodys smokes and brews in tennessee. Old bottle that had been on the shelf a while. Clearish amber pour with fair offwhite head. A bit bready on the aroma. Slight nutty, lots of caramel/toast flavor. Slightly yeasty. Definitely english as it had no real discernable hop presence other than an ever so slight bitterness. meh.

Originally reviewed 6.6.08. Single bottled poured into a pint glass where nothing happened. Unremarkable appearance and nose. Virtually no head. Moderately bitter, the taste was sour milk garnished with a banana slice.
