Bright bottled from cask (gravity), Reading Beer Festival, April 2006. Very dark colour. Big coffee aroma. Burnt malt, cooking chocolate and cocoa powder on the palate. Plenty of flavour. Very dry. Distinctly bitter, almost sour, finish and aftertaste. Fairly light body. Not a stout from the smooth and mellow school, but I thought it was very good.

Cask @ Reading 06: Black with a tan head. Sweet cara, dark roast malts and nice chocolate. Pleasant.

Bottle conditioned, from Beer Cellar in Lincoln. Jet black, thin shortlived off white head and low condition. Low coffee and chocolate in the nose with some hints of roast barley and gentle phenolic smokiness. Quite thin in the mouth, gently fruity with a coffee dryness developing, some hints of creamy sweetness. Phenolic note re-emerges in the finish, becoming quite plastic at times, otherwise just gently dry and roasted.

Bottle Conditioned. Black with a very small then no head. Aromas are sweet roast malts, coffee with molasses, chocolate and licourice. Flavours are sweet and malty with dry roast malts to follow. Has berry fruitiness and sourness. Hints of salt. Chocolate towards the back of the gulp. Silky on the palate. Dry and hoppy on the finish. A good bottled stout.
