UPDATED: JAN 18, 2016 Many thanks to bobinlondon for hauling this bottle all the way back from Franconia for me!! Pours a medium/dark brown with a light tan head. The smell is toasted malt, molasses, smoke. The taste is roasted malt, smoke, bacon, molasses and fruit on the end along with some dryness. Fairly light in body with coarse carbonation. oh6gdx (26487) - Vasa, FINLAND - MAR 29, 2015
Bottled (from landbierparadies). Copper colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is mild toasted and smoked wood, some sweet malts, some toffee and mild earthy notes. Flavour is mild smoked wet wood with a nice wooden and resiny bitterness to it as well as some sweet malts. Balanced and tasty. TAR (2779) - Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA - SEP 15, 2014
Tap at the brewpub in Aug. 2014: Polished golden with a rusty gleam. Fine-bubbled wisp of foam. Clean aroma of smoked hay and subtler notes of lemon, plum, pecan, minerals, and a vague prosciutto quality. Soft and restrained carbonation. Crackery crisp malt gives way to increasingly rich and well-textured haylike smoky lushness and tongue-hugging earthy breadcrust notes. Assertive bite of woody Spalt lightens the body as does a punch of sharp minerals. Well-placed plummy esters produce a ripe twang along with plum skin acids to accompany the richer fleshy succulence. Just enough toasty grip to deepen the malty softness and contrast with the fruitiness. Lemon hops sparkle in the background, boosting drinkability. Scratchy minerals echo the deep and resonant woody hop bitterness which is well matched with the soundly structured malt. Lean finish consists of pronounced cracker and pils malt-derived starches atop a smoked wood base. What this is missing is rich melanoidin character and more malty fullness in general. But overall it’s a very solid rauchbier that’s to be commended for its cleanness and balance, even if the aroma and nose are somewhat subdued. Highly sluggable. 3fourths (9357) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - AUG 12, 2014
Draft at the brewery in Lichtenfelds. Amber brown, clear, short off-white head.Beerhunter111 (22221) - P´Castle, GERMANY - JUN 27, 2014
Pleasant smoke pork aroma with notes of campfire wood. Medium body, semi-sweet, lightly sour, husky and gritty in the mouth with a lingering burnt wood ash flavor and char astringency in the finish. Enticing smoked malt aroma with a relatively disappointing flavor balance, and the body seems watery, similar to the pils.
Hellbraunes Bier mit ordentlicher beiger Schaumkrone. Geruch rauchtig, Schinken, röstmalzig. Geschmack rauchig malzig, Schinken, leicht fruchtig, Karamell.

Many thanks for this bottle to Beerhunter111. Dark chestnut color with thin tan head. Aroma has an initial blast of meaty smoke aroma, but as it warms, the smoke evens out. kappldav123 (6129) - GERMANY - MAR 4, 2014
Bottle looks very simple but good. Beer in the glass zippy, brownish, small head. Starts malty, not too roasty, fine earthy-smokey notes. Hints of bacon. Well balanced finish, dry-malty, smokey aftertaste. Nice! Idiosynkrasie (7843) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - NOV 7, 2013
500ml bottle. Clear copper colour with average to huge, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white head. Smoky aroma, notes of ham, caramel malty background. Taste is minimally to moderately sweet malty, smoky, dry hoppy overtones, dry finish; slightly light and almost a bit watery. Well balanced, not overdone, could be more beefy for my personal taste. jfb (6574) - GERMANY - SEP 24, 2013
(bottle) pours a clear deep amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of smoked ham, light caramel and herbal hops, with notes of starchy pale malts, light earth, spicy debrecziner and gravy. flavour is mostly the same, with big notes of smoked ham, some honey, pepper, chewy pale malts and herbal hops in the slightly minerally light-bitter finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation. awesome stuff! downender (8774) - Bristol, Gloucestershire, ENGLAND - AUG 7, 2013
Bottle from LBP, Nurnberg. Copper coloured with next to no head and slight carbonation. Caramel and light smoke aroma. Easy drinking, with some fruity sweetness, touch of brown sugar and a hint of roasted malts in the gentle finish. Good.
