This collaboration Belgian beer is brewed with local Riverbend malt smoked in 12 Bones Smokehouse’s smoker. The robust flavors of chocolate malt and Belgian yeast build upon the smokehouse flavor of the 12 Bones malt. We spent hours with the 12 Bones team to create this wonderfully complex and very special ale. Also, look for 12 Bones Smokehouse “Wicked Weed BBQ sauce” infused with our Freak DIPA.

Growler from my incredible mother-in-law. Pours a dark brown, nearly clear. Nose shows hickory smoke and meaty notes at first, but I acclimate to the beer, subtler flavors appear, including chocolate, bread, and a great Belgian yeast note that works really well with the beer. As with all smoked beers, it seems like a smoke bomb at first but turns into something quite lovely.

Appearance: Deep amber-hued body, fair clarity, with a medium-small, ivory-hued head.

Smell: Lightly grainy, toasted malts. Sliver of caramel, chocolate. Heavy, cooked raisin note. Medium-light smoke component that is noted with a thoughtful nod but is not overbearing. Lightly phenolic Belgian yeast hints beneath it all.

Taste: Well-toasted grains wrapped in a little bit of caramel and chocolate. Subtle sweetness falls out quickly. Raisin dusted with ground coriander seed. An integrated smokiness followed by a nibble of pear. Earthy spiciness on the drying, lightly smoky finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, smooth mouthfeel. Medium carbonation.

Overall: While I would prefer a bit more sustained sweetness, it is fairly decent and nicely walks the line between its Belgian and smoke qualities.

On tap at WW - thanks, Mike! Viscous burgundy pour, creamy medium head. Hardcore nose of rich choc, smoke, and tang (both from yeast additions and from the sauce). Definitely an interesting beer, with a body somewhere between a rich porter and an oud bruin, and a taste profile that’s not far off that either. Very distinctive, and very good.

Draft at brewpub. Pours the color of barbecue sauce with a thin khaki head. Big smoky notes on the nose. Hides it’s alcohol well. Another fantastically drinkable brew from Wicked Weed. Nice and meaty on the tongue with blends nicely with the smoke. Finishes clean. Very nice!

Tap. Amber with dissipating white head. Smells like smoky wet dog. Tastes smoked, too. Round mouth feel, tad watery on the finish.

Oh god. This is definitely perfection for barbecue. Lush wood smoke sits on top of Belgian yeast driven pome fruit esters -- largely apple, bits of pear. Lightly creamy, nothing of a binding or particulate nature to clog up your tongue’s buds. Long lasting lightly tan head. Fine foam. Clear medium dark brown. Touches a deep hunger. Big enough not to sit as backseat to substantial smoke, acetic sauces and barbecue yet confident to hold its own drunk solo. Among the best smoked beers I’ve ever had. Truly American. Truly barbecue. Fantastic.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours near black. The aroma is of meaty smoke with hints at anise, light coffee and wood. I tried to recall if I’ve ever had a smoked Belgian ale before, can’t think of anything. It’s pretty interesting. The banana and clove are prominent in the flavor with a constant meaty smoke in the background. I would have liked more smoked quality. The finish suggests cacao, grilled fruits and wooden bitterness.
