COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Freak is our San Francisco inspired hoppy monster. At 8.4% abv and who knows how many ibu’s, this beer is our shrine to the Hop. Absurd amounts of all the big West Coast hops give this beer it’s citrusy weedy nose and big dank hop flavor. Drinking this beer is like stuffing your face into a bag of fresh hops while eating a tangerine. We dry hop with 48lbs per batch or over 3lbs of hops per barrel. In following with the classic style of the West Coast double sugar plays a big part in creating this dry and minimally bitter double IPA. The Freak is particularly pintable for the style, so if you dare to enter we welcome you to the Freak Show.

Very happy to try a small growler of this at Beer Study. Clean sharp yellow pour with one finger of white head. Super resinous and oily nose, there’s a mild onion/garlic component with lots of citrus. Super hoppy and resinous, pretty awesome.

First a draft at an ATL bar, then in the bomber in the hotel room. Vastly different experiences. On draft, I found it thin and unappealing. Perhaps an old, unkempt keg. In the bottle, this is more appealing, and more of an apt American DIPA offering. Sticky and hoppy, I'd get it again. (#6767, 8/31/2017)

Draft at the source. Pours clear golden orange with a creamy white head. Nose is orange rind, pine, caramel. Resiny hops flavors, maybe some malt in there, but this is all hops. Medium bodied, moderate carb. Lingering bitter hoppy finish. You may not drink six of these but you’ll sure enjoy one.

On the RBSG16 bus. Pours a clear gold with a medium sized white head. Big musk, citrus. Medium bodied, warming alcohol, soft citrus, a bit of wheat and musk. Long grapefruit into the finish. Big and tasty.

Dark golden color with a tall, lasting, light ecru colored head. Sweet caramel scents along with fresh citric and tropical fruit. Mostly orange and pineapple, but other fruits and zest wander about. Nice sweet malty start. Middle gets the hops rolling with pine and citrus. If anything a bit harsh in the finish to linger. To utilize the new vernacular, certainly dank. What seems like raw hops and alcohol in the middle to late finish is the only minor flaw in my book. As this warms some blueberries and other light fruit come out. Yet, the late harshness remains.

500 ml bottle dates 5-28-17, in a trade with TJ. Aroma of danky pine, citrus, and light candied oranges. Flavor shows me the same candy orange 9in a mild way), pine, dank pine, mild onion. Huge pine gives a West Coast style IPA feel about the entire brew.

The bitterness is assertive with it being all pine and earthy notes. Pretty nice even if AB Inbev is involved with this brewery! ha ha ha

Crisp and clear golden and slightly orange coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall off-white head.Aroma of fresh grassy and herbal hops with a dose of alcohol and a moderately strong biscuity malt nose. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong grassy and herbal hops dominate the flavour with a reasonably balanced malt backbone, some light resinous and piney finishes of hops as well, but nothing entirely bitter or pungent and the malt sort of dies out near the end, making this balanced, not so bitter and extremely one-dimensional. Aftertaste very straight-forward and fairly mundane, definitely not complex or interesting and the alcohol doesn’t hit too hard either, which is fairly nice, but a bit more is to be expected by others, I’m sure. Overall, I know why this has high ratings (because of a label), but have no clue what people see in this. It’s a decent beer with some decent flavours, but not more exciting than what you’d find at your local brewpub, and definitely not worth going out of your way to sample or buy. I sampled this 50 cL stubby bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 31-May-2017 for US$5,99 sampled at home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on my birthday, 30-June-2017. Bottled on: 04-May-2017, Purchased: 31-May-2017, Sampled: 30-June-2017.

Pours a two finger white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Clear amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Pine hop nose and flavor is balanced with piney hops and malt, lingering hoppy aftertaste, higher ABV, 8.5%, is hidden. Decent DIPA. $6.95 for a 500ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma. Bottled Feb 2017.
