3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I had this right after the rye barrel aged one. I started to do a side-by-side with all three. However...after finishing one at an ABV of 10% you tend to forget what your original plan would be. Either way, this one was good, but not as good at the Rye barrel aged one IMO.
Cherry or blackberry and oak make a juice like aroma coming from this clear ruby red brew with large yeast flakes and no head. Sweet and slightly oaky. Almost like cough syrup. Full bodied and low carb with an okay bitter aftertaste with a touch of warming. Lubiere (14196) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - APR 16, 2016
A hazed reddish copper ale with a thin light mocha head and floaties. In mouth, sweet fruity malt with candy sugar and caramel malt, light vinous character, alcohol warmth, resinous hops, nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity malt with light grassy floral hops, light vinous character, light woody notes, very nice. Dark amber color, hazy, with compact head and nice lace. Good body strength, but the alcohol seems too evident; good malt flavor, but it has a too strong impression of vanilla cookies, and mild bourbon.
Solid beer, I couldn’t drink much of this though, nor it would excite me for a snifter.
Bottle. Pours a cloudy copper with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is roasted malt and citrus. Medium mouth, candy sugar, rye, oak, nice booze, very good.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured clear reddish copper color with a moderate frothy tan head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium to heavy toasted malt, wood with a small alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a good beer. alexsdad06 (10951) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - OCT 23, 2015
22 oz. bottle shared with the group. Pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, lightly toasted oak, more woody, vanilla, cherry, some citrus, boozy, all the flavors didn’t really play well together early, I could see what they were trying to do here and this started to improve for me as it warmed as more of the flavors come out, still a bit sweet. Taste from a 22oz bottle. My pour is towards the end. Lots of chunky yeast clouding up the red orange body. Minimal ring of white head. Hint of oxidization in the nose, but a pretty nice flavor... Oak, orange, toasty malt. Bottle just says oak, nothing about bourbon or whiskey, but I feel like I get some liquor in the flavor. Lots of good earthy old ale malty flavors, and a bit of warmth on the back end. Moderate-plus sweet taste, light bitter. Medium to bigger body. Kind of smooth, light carbonation. Mild dry finish. Full body. Solid, interesting old ale. after4ever (8025) - Mukilteo, Washington, USA - MAR 13, 2015
Draft at SB. Pours a murky dark brown with a dense and creamy tan head that sticks around forever. Big sweet malty nose, tons of unfermented cereal sugars. Caramel, molasses, brown bread dough. Creamy thick body with soft carb. Caramel, molasses, apricots, and vanilla on the mid palate. Nice, but mostly a bunch of sweet stuff running around. Bottle via Eric: First off this is a beautiful brew, glowing coppery hue with a small but lasting head. First there is a pronounced cotton candy tone that actually is very appropriate here. Slight macerated cherries, candied orange zest and some lemon twists too. A light handed white winey hop character makes this even more enthralling. The tannic nature of the new oak is a sublime addition to the complex flavor profile even if it not on the nose. Finally what can only be described as Grains of Paradise brings a spicy touch to the aftertaste. All in all I am digging this much more than I would have anticipated. Perhaps a few months age helped it out, I dunno?
