3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep redish amber color, clear, with a thin white head that left before I got to it on the sample tray. Little aroma, very sweet, with fruity esthers. Wish I knew the ABV on this one, seemed fairly high, but hard to tell as it was pretty well masked.
On draught at Widmer Gasthaus. Dark amber in color. Smooth alcohol warming with taste of roasted malt, pit fruit, and faint chocolate. SledgeJr (3577) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - FEB 3, 2010
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a copper brown color with a big off-white beige head. has a caramel aroma. The beer produces a great malt syrup bolus. The sweetness is then smoothed out by at great bitter hop palate. This has a phenomenal mouth feel. The best beer poured here. raphael (1286) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUL 10, 2008
what is in my mouth? roasted malt thinned with water, whiskey, dark cheries & maybe a stray cigarette butt. aroma of roasted malt, dark syrup (sans maple.) dark brown with ruby highlights, no head. great in the mouth--- numbing the tongue and all around. a good intensity, but hte pieces dont fit together Bradrcr (806) - Renton, Washington, USA - FEB 9, 2008
1/19/08 On draught at the Portland brewhouse. Aroma is smoky, malt-forward, with no hop character and some dark fruit character in the background. Appearance is amber/brown with a very low head. Flavor is rich, sweet and fruity, with malt dominance followed by moderate flora-free bittering and a low alcoholic note. Mouthfeel is medium/high bodied with medium carb texture and good alcoholic warmth. Overall, great complexity, but probably wouldn’t go for more than one. boFNjackson (4201) - Portland, Oregon, USA - NOV 9, 2006
tap at the Widmer brew pub... dark ruby color with brown head. presence of alcohol, malt and sweetness maybe from chocolate. very complex but very drinkable.

On Tap At Widmer Brothers brewery/pub in Portland OR. pours out a nice rich brown topped with a tan head. A little bit of sweet of caramel. jennajlover (135) - Portland, Oregon, USA - FEB 22, 2006
On tap at the Widmer Gasthaus, Portland brewhouse.Smells amazing. Tons of malty sweetness that oozes with caramel and raisins. Even the most vigorous pour only produced a thin ring that I wouldn’t even call head. The beer is dark brown in color with a ruby glow. The lack of carbonation in this beer is almost to the point of flat, and it makes for a dissapointly watery mouthfeel. It isn’t as sweet as the aroma suggests, but then that’s not such a bad thing. There is plenty of caramel and toffee flavors up front. Towards the end there is a bit of alcohol and a faint bitterness that is more astringent then hop induced. A decent doppelbock with an amazing aroma.

On tap at the Widmer Gasthaus, Portland brewhouse. Poured a dark chocolate brown, with a good tan head. Coffee and chocolate Great palate, almost like oil. This was by far my favorite, and wish is was available in bottles in my hometown. A real winner. harlequinn (2744) - Tacoma, Washington, USA - JAN 10, 2006
This was not bad. Brown with some ruby highlights, and a nice creamy head and some sticky lacing. A little bit of herbaly sweetness right up front followed by some stick chocolate and caramel. Strong oily mouthfeel, not bad, not my favorite, but still well made. beerinmarch (2830) - Washington, USA - MAR 20, 2005
On tap at the tap house. Pours deep cherry red with a fast falling white head. Sweet malt aroma with chocolate and caramel. The first taste I noticed was some cocoa up front followed with a rich caramel body, some nice weight on the palate showed the thicker body of this beer. Very well balanced but fairly mild doppelbock.
