The biggest problem is finding it. Too often kolsch as a Summer Ale is only available in late summer. There are a few places that will serve it on tap on an irregular basis. If you’re tired of one pale after another try it you won’t be disappointed.

Sample @ Three Notch’d Tasting. Hazy gold pour with a small head. Pretty light nose. Some honeyed bread and mineral. Taste is soft and mellow. Honeydew melon. White bread. White grapes. Soft and slightly chalky. Not bad.

22 ounce bottle shared at a tasting, 10/6/14. Pours a hazy straw color with a thin creamy white head. Good head retention. Aroma of bread, straw, corn, honey, mild fruits. The taste is corn, pale malt, bread, hay, herbal hops. Medium bodied.

On tap at Widmer, pours a clear dull yellow with a small white head. Aroma is typical for the style, with dry biscuity malt. Flavour is crisp and dry, with dry biscuity malt and some crisp grassy bitterness. Really nice kolsch, balanced beautifully and with the nice subtleties that the style can be executed with. Very good.

Pretty basic stuff. Has that common corn grain flavor as beers of this style do...but it’s really smooth and there’s no off flavors. Easy drinker

Gotta love the Timbers cap. Anyway, bomber from Albertsons. Good price, 3$ or so. Pours a super clear light yellow color, almost totally clear. A light grainy nose .The flavor is light toasted malts, some perfume, light spices akin to cedar, a bit of pear. Pretty smooth, very light. Good. I’d booze with this at a Timbers game.

Pours one finger of head on a clear light straw colored body. The aroma is light grain. Not much but fine. The taste has a moderate lemon and grapefruit bitterness but still easy drinking. The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation. A fine enough drink.

Bottle:   Pale straw, fairly clear, moderate frothy white head, nice lacing.   Straw and hay on the nose.   Not terribly sweet.   Grainy up front, mealy backside.   Lingering straw and hay, and also a strong mealiness.   Not as clean as the Occidental I had the other night.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Really mealy on the finish.   Clean otherwise, but not really my type.

Poured from 22oz bomber from Made in Oregon. This is an easy drinking beer, as to be expected about Kolsch style beers. Perhaps a 9.5 in category- likely the best Kolsch I’ve had. Color is transparent light hay color with a white, quickly disappearing head. No hops on palate but there is a corn cereal flavor along with faint rose water. 5.5 BD 9-20-13
