22oz bottle pours out copper rust color with a small head. Nose is big rich caramel toffee some old hops. Taste is more of the nice rich malts and some dead hops. I guess I should have got into this a few years ago. JohnGalt1 (1721) - Boise, Idaho, USA - NOV 17, 2015
decent but short lasting tannish head.. the brew is surprisingly dark.. deeep amber but very clear.
Nose is very complex.. but odd for sure... tons of caramel and melanoiden notes ... burnt sugars and earthy elements that I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around... punctuated by a mildly assertive hoppy presence.
Flavor mirrors the aromas but some very nice fruity notes come out as dried cherry and fresh fig.. even blackberry... dark bread and maybe some pipe tobacco toward the finish.. sorta salty burnt sugar at the end of the palate....
The booze in this one helps a bunch right now as it is really all over the place with aromas and flavors.. the EtOH helps tie things together slowrunner77 (12471) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 27, 2014
slightly overpriced in Widmer’s Reserve line, but a nice traditional american hoppy barleyeine. high ibus, obvious hopping (so much so that the candi sugar nearly goes unnoticed) but there is a little balance between the hoppiness and carmel sweetness. medium-full bodied, with ample carbonation. nice brew. evident alcohol heat in the nose especially prevents an even higher score."

Bottle, shared with Robbie. Tawny amber with a soft golden head. Sweet toffee malts, chewy, with a light kiss of fruity hops and moderate bitterness in balance. A really lovely barley wine. arminjewell (9689) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - MAY 28, 2014
Pour out of 22 oz bottle, hazy red pour with white head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, caramel, sherry, hints of oxidation, slight grassy notes, pretty nice. Taste is a mix of oxidation, grass, sherry, hints of red fruit, berry, caramel, hints of grain, finishing fairly sweet, slightly dry.

Pours dark amber/brown with mid-range head. Malty caramel aroma with some hoppy notes. Sweet and malty, some candy and caramel. Hops come in on the back end, along with alcohol finish. Also some dark fruit. cards04 (2830) - Steinbach, Manitoba, CANADA - JAN 14, 2014
A very nice barley wine. Pours a light mahogany with cream colored head. Amazing cotton candy, caramel, and sweet fruity aromas. Nice sweet fruity characteristics with a smooth hoppy finish. No alcohol to be detected. Yummmmmmm! beersearcher (2382) - Glendale, California, USA - JAN 9, 2014
This beer pours a dark reddish brown. I got a strange whiff when opening the bottle and was worried because this is a hopped beer from 2011! But I figured that the high ABV of 9.5% and the candy sugar from Belgium would offset that. The initial aroma once in the glass is a bit of caramel, a little Werthers wrapped candy. But I also get a quick hit of bitterness and at the back the faint aroma of sawdust.
The taste is surprisingly good. This beer did hold up! There is a good sparkle to it. A little caramel which must be from the candy sugar and then a good bit of bitterness that holds on for a while. I’m also getting some notes of citrus juice too. The end dries up the palate a bit but then the next sip begins the re-hydrating process anew. superspak (5797) - Michigan, USA - DEC 12, 2013
22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/14/2011. Pours very hazy dark ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big raisin, orange zest, pineapple, grapefruit, caramel, toast, toffee, candi sugar, biscuit, floral, grass, light pine, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and hop notes; with good strength. Taste of raisin, grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, caramel, toast, toffee, floral, pine, grass, candi sugar, biscuit, and floral earthiness. Slight pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, citrus, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, floral, light pine, candi sugar, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of malt and hop flavors; with a great hop/malt balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a moderately slick, smooth, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice barleywine style. All around good complexity and balance of malt and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering. ansalon (4085) - Stockholm, SWEDEN, SWEDEN - DEC 11, 2013
Pours nutmeg with almost no head. Aroma is caramel, honey, figs, butterscotch, dates. Taste is caramel, honey, butterscotch, dates, figs, ripe apples. Very good.
