People sometimes describe the aromas and flavors of hoppy IPAs as grapefruit. Hell, why not use some then? Widmers brewing team used a simple IPA recipe and added a generous amount of dried grapefruit peel to the end of the boil. The aroma is a melody of citrus, with a slight spice undertone, accentuated by the use of Citra hops. The flavor is that of nice hop forward IPA with the bitterness of grapefruit.

Poured from a bottle to a tulip glass. Appearance: Beautiful clear, golden with and orange hue. Poured with a good three finger off white head. It dissipated quickly. Some head lacing. Good carbonation as well. Aroma: As soon as I popped the top I could smell the grapefruit. A little spice notes. Overall just a citrusy, hop smell. Mainly picking up the grapefruit. Smells refreshing. Taste: Very smooth right from the tip of the tongue. A little hop bitterness with a definite citrus taste. Slight bit of sweetness. Carbonation very present in the mouth feel. Verdict: Very nice IPA. I like that they added the grapefruit in there. Adds to the bitterness of the hops without making it too overpowering and having too long of an aftertaste. I like this a lot. Didn't know what to expect we haven't had them around long. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

sort of stale aroma but not bad. flavor is a little on the musty side with expected frutiness and a moderately bitter finish. kind of unclean but has a nice refreshing quality. reminds me a lot of the x114 or whatever it was called, but, (you guessed it) a little fruitier. not one to seek out and savor, but not a bad offering at all. i would have liked the grapefruit peel to be more dominant, if thats supposed to be this beers gimmick, you know?

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 8/26/12

Aroma: The nose has citrus hop/grapefruit rind, some resin, and a floral notes
Appearance: Pours a slightly hazed orange color with a small white head and medium lace
Flavor: The taste is lightly sweet and light-medium bitter, much like the nose, with grapefruit and resin
Palate: The body is light-medium, with a soft-to-average carbonation, a clean feel, and a slightly dry finish
Overall Impression: I actually thought this one was pretty solid. The grapefruit rind is really quite noticeable, and was the first thing I noticed, long before reading the description. Interesting and solid stuff.

Widmer Brothers Shaddock IPA has a medium, off-white head and a mostly clear, sediment-ridden, slightly bubbly, orange-golden appearance, with some fairly thick lacing left behind. The aroma is strongly of grapefruit, even from a distance. Taste is of bitter, grapefruit peel and a bit of barley malt. The bitterness seems to be coming from the added fruit, not the hops. Mouthfeel is medium, and Widmer Brothers Shaddock IPA finishes tart, tangy, mostly dry, and fruity. Overall, its good. RJT

12 oz bottle bought from Super 1 in CDA, ID. Pours hazy golden-orange with a thin white collapsing head. Aroma is cat piss first, followed by mild grapefruit and some bready malt. Taste starts out mildly sweet before becoming really bitter and lingering that way through the long finish. The grapefruit really comes to the fore after it warms up a bit. Pretty good.

Growler sample via and shared with oakbluff. Caramel gold in colour with medium carbonation. Quite floral on the nose, mixed with elements of pink grapefruit and pine. A mix of pale malt and dry biscuit malts blend welll with smooth tangerine and grapefruit notes. Moderate bitterness. Almost too mellow... it could have been brighter.
