This is one of my favorite beers. Nothing better than an Alt at the brewery talking with Nick, one of the last great bartenders. Stop and say hi from Gary. Shadallion (534) - Sacramento, California, USA - JUL 25, 2001
Formerly known as Ur-Alt in tribute to the beer after which it is inspired: Zum Uerige Alt, the classic alt from Dusseldorf. One of the best aromas I’ve ever encountered. Richly malty but still very well balanced, although the hops don’t give much flavor, as fitting for the style. Eminently drinkable. Alts are really starting to become one of my favorite beer styles. amceachern99 (70) - Albany, Oregon, USA - NOV 23, 2001
Wish they would brew more of this, hard to find.

The first beer the Widmers ever brewed, Springfest is still one of their best. An altbier , or German ale, it is dry like a lager, but fuller-flavored and bitter. The original was 60 IBUs, but his is a slightly more modest 42. TheBeerLover (1027) - DC Metro Area, USA - JAN 25, 2006
Widmer Springfest pours to a beautiful, bright, deep amber/light brown color with a nice stiff white head, and a lively amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is very inviting with some nice herbal/spicy hop aromas paired with some light sweet malt aromas. The palate is soft with good clean, slighty sweet and nutty malt flavors on the tongue. The body on this beer is just so round and smooth, making it a very clean and drinkable beer. Widmer Springfest finishes with a short, snappy, vibrant burst of herbal hop bitterness that slightly lingers.
This is a well done domestic example of a very local German beer style, altbier. What I love about alt bier is that wonderful balance of malt and hop flavors and aromas. Nice balance of both in the nose, a malty body, and then that snappy burst of herbal hop bitterness makes this just a wonderful beer to enjoy. Springfest is not quite up to snuff with the Germans, but this is a nice beer.

Nutty, malty, some burntness, and maybe even a little smoke. Has a real nice roasty-toasty flavor and aroma to it. Body was a little thin, but it was easily overlooked. Some hop zing... some bitterness, but not much. CrimsonGhost1971 (188) - USA - MAR 24, 2002
Is it assertively hoppy? Yes. Does it quench your thirst? Yes. Surprisingly smooth and perfect on a warm day with minimal bitterness. ;) bubslang (438) - Kentwood, Michigan, USA - DEC 9, 2002
pours a kinda of a copper color with decent head, malty aroma and taste balanced nicely with hops Gusler (2653) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - APR 26, 2002
Re-Rate 04/26/02: Deep garnet in color, the head beige, nice lace, nose is malt, caramel, earthy, sweet. Front hits your palate sweet, top light, the finish nicely hopped, dry, acidic and quite quaffable. philbertk (1873) - Seattle, Washington, USA - FEB 23, 2010
