The first beer the Widmers ever brewed, Springfest is still one of their best. An altbier , or German ale, it is dry like a lager, but fuller-flavored and bitter. The original was 60 IBUs, but his is a slightly more modest 42.

Had this beer on 4/17/2000. Aroma is a light citrus hop scent. Color is a nice golden brown with light carbonation and head. Taste is sharp, rich and bitter. Starting with a medium body it goes down with a rich malt feel that is sharp on the end. The finish is this sharp feel turning into a bitterness. Its not well balanced and doesn’t make for a good spring brew.

Widmer Springfest pours to a beautiful, bright, deep amber/light brown color with a nice stiff white head, and a lively amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is very inviting with some nice herbal/spicy hop aromas paired with some light sweet malt aromas. The palate is soft with good clean, slighty sweet and nutty malt flavors on the tongue. The body on this beer is just so round and smooth, making it a very clean and drinkable beer. Widmer Springfest finishes with a short, snappy, vibrant burst of herbal hop bitterness that slightly lingers. This is a well done domestic example of a very local German beer style, altbier. What I love about alt bier is that wonderful balance of malt and hop flavors and aromas. Nice balance of both in the nose, a malty body, and then that snappy burst of herbal hop bitterness makes this just a wonderful beer to enjoy. Springfest is not quite up to snuff with the Germans, but this is a nice beer.

From the bottle this brew pours a deep red with mahogany tones and a small off-white head. Very dry grain, not overly sweet, but very earthy with a medium bitter finish. Light caramel notes show as it warms but doesn’t last long as the flavors finishes bitter.

I disagree that this is "assertively hoppy" but it's probably not the first time. This is easy to drink but not something I would want to drink on a regular basis. It is smooth and refreshing though.

Brown with decent off white head. Acidic nose. Vinegary flavor. I obviously had a bad one.

Nate (4296) - Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 8, 2003
Worty, malty aroma. Bit of molasses and fruity hops. Nice ruby-brown color with light tan foamy, lacing head. Medium-high carb, kind of fizzy with medium watery body. Malts in the mouth, but not sweet - lagerish. Prominent bitterness/nutty finish and after - sticks on the back of the tongue. Definitely not as good as German altbiers.

bubslang (438) - Kentwood, Michigan, USA - DEC 9, 2002
pours a kinda of a copper color with decent head, malty aroma and taste balanced nicely with hops

Medium brown color, medium head. Nicely hopped and malted Alt ale. Finish is crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.Nice beer.

I thought this was rather modestly hopped actually. Grains were very apparent (especially in the bouquet) and tasted rather 'unfinished' balanced with the of malt. Although I find it rather refreshing to find a beer so prevalent in grains, this didn't seem to blend well with the rest of the beer.
