I think I just love this style. This is a really well-done Black IPA. I recommend trying this blind up against the standard-bearers of the style (in particular Stone XI/Self-Righteous). There’s an extra grainy/malty/bready dimension to this style that doesn’t exist in regular IPAs, that makes for a very welcome balance.

Loved this dark, happy IPA. From a bottle at duffman’s house. I’m really beginning to fancy the dark IPA’s... love the dark burnt malt type flavor added to the bitter hops. If you like Cascadian Darks, you’ll love this one. kidmartinek (4999) - austin, Texas, USA - JAN 3, 2010
Pours black in the middle and caramel on the edge. Half inch tan head that is dense and frothy. The head holds to an adequate film on the surface due to adequate carbonation. The aroma is strong malt and hops. It smells like an IPA and the toastiness of the dark malt is there too. The flavor is hoppy, bitter, malty, toasty, and a small amount of spicy. The consistency is that of skim milk and the palate is medium and velvety smooth. It has a small initial bite, that smothens out quickly. The finish is reminiscent of faint chocolate malt and hop spice. The finish is also quick and clean, only lasting a brief moment. IPAsavedMYlife (346) - St. Petersburg, Florida, USA - JUL 6, 2011
NW Hops aroma, slight malt, bar soap, honey. Beer poured fairly flat but what head was there, it was nice and creamy. Color is def pitch black and head is a nice kakhi color. Lots of roasted barley notes, sweetness for a BIPA. Huge floral hop profile. Light mouthfeel. Fairly regular BIPA. Finishes with a dry hop cringe that lingers. Much like a Bells North Coast Ale, but not as well made. Enjoyability: 4/5 badwhale (420) - Bitterville, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 7, 2011
Bottle to pint glass. Pouts a (bitch) black, but really it has a little transparency. Dark brown, virtually no head, but laces well. Has some great hop bite flavors, and a roasted malt aftertaste. Pretty darn nice.

Great complexity. Hoppy aroma and fully flavorful. As good as a sweet stout and a light IPA all wrapped into one. Will have it when I see it. a_cross (639) - Poole, Dorset, ENGLAND - MAY 24, 2014
Pitch black (unsurprisingly), white head; hoppy aroma; taste is a deliciously moreish combination of tangy exotic fruit, resinous hops, toasted malt and coffee; big mouthfeel and long lasting dry finish; this pushed all the right buttons; I really really wanted another. thooper41 (556) - BELGIUM - JAN 8, 2010
12oz bottle: Appearance is pitch black like a stout with slow fading light brown head, Aroma dominating in citrusy hops, Taste has a lot of hops up front with a subtle bit of roasted malt in the back, very well balanced. IMO Widmer took themselves to a new level with this beer. BeerFanDan17 (1107) - Brunswick, Maine, USA - JUN 19, 2011
Pint at Dunderbaks... nice hoppy arom with hints of caramel and citrus. Good malt balance too with slight bit of coffee. Yun! gdubu493 (60) - New Jersey, USA - NOV 14, 2013
Bottle drank @ Harry & Izzy’s in Indianapolis. Was really impressed with this beer. Easily one of my favorite blabk IPAs
