Bomber bottle and served in PW snifter: Pours a deep brown, nearly opaque with a small fading head and minimal lace. The aroma has notes of herbal and piney hops, hint of pineapple and pear, faint smoke and toast, bready and earthy with a slight pipe tobacco character. The taste is quite smooth, moderate bitterness and not overly roasty nor overly sweet. Very well balanced but some hopheads may be disappointed. Ashy and very lightly smoked finish. The mouthfeel is smooth but is a tad thin for my preferences. Overall the best beer in my limited time with Wild Onion, solid offering. crossovert (13724) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 13, 2013
Extremely solid black ipa. It has pine and resin but also some nice cocoa and roasted malt. xdtfx (5) - Illinois, USA - MAY 17, 2013 does not count
Reviewing after the fact. Initially had on draft at the Onion brew pub. Afterwards was able to find 22oz bombers at my local bottle shop that I still need to try. Aroma is citrusy hops with a roasted malt character. Taste follows the nose with citrusy hops, some pine, roasty dark malts, maybe a tad of chocolate in there. Overall I thought this was a pretty solid Black IPA. Tasty and easy to drink. I enjoy Wild Onion’s Hop Slayer from time to time. I enjoyed this one just as much if not more.
