Black color. Some aroma of roasted malt. Medium body, with a quite strong roasted malt flavor, and a light sourness. Not as much creamy as promised.

On tap at Wild Rose, pours a deep dark brown with an amber tinge with a small tan head. Aroma brings out toasted malt and slightly sweet dark fruit. Flavour is very weak, with notes of very subtle dark fruit and light toasted malt. Weak and without body or character. Very disappointing, as with all this brewerys output.

Tap at the Craft Beer Market, Calgary. It pours very dark brown, with a thin beige head. The nose is roasted malt, liquorice, sticky, coffee and bitter chocolate. The taste is roasted malt, coffee, liquorice, dark chocolate, touch of caramel and dark bread, with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and low-medium carbonation. Smooth, well balanced and flavoursome. Good stuff.

On-tap at the brewery. Coffee aroma, coffee colour and some lace. Above average carbonation and acicity. A coffee more than a beer. Its bold coffee taste, however not a great stout.

Draft at the brewpub. Black body with a good creamy tan head (4+). Very roasty aroma, roast barley, modest malt underpinnings. Flavour is similarly roasty, fairly bitter roast. Mild underlying malt is a bit overwhelmed by the roast. Average palate is on the thin side of acceptability for a stout. Pretty solid, straightforward stout, but not entirely to my personal tastes.

We hit the Calgary Farmers Market on Saturday and sidled into the adjacent Wild Rose Brewery for a bite of lunch and a few half-pint samplers. Opaque black beer, showing its true clear chestnut brown colour at the edges. Thin tight tan pad of a head generating excellent lace. Earthy chocolate aroma, minerally. Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel, quite a dry finish. An excellent companion to their stellar chili!

[796-20071102] Tap @ Wild Rose (Calgary, AB). Dark malt and coffee chocolate aroma. Dark brown black body with a medium-lasting brown creamy head. Malt coffee flavour is dark roasted. Full body. Good stout, nice coffee qualities.

Tap at craft beer market. Black, brown cream. Licorice, light lactic, medium body, mellow dry mouthfeel. Spice, roast, licorice finish. Dont think this was a fresh sample.

Pint on tap at the Sugarbowl in Edmonton poured pitch black in color with a finger of beige head that left a little lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Taste is roasted bitterness, coffee and malty sweetness with a lingering mild bitterness from the hops. Nicely balanced stout with medium to full body and mild carbonation. Very nice.
