A great malt body with 30 pounds of Amarillo and Cascade hops added over a 5 hour period results in an assertive but balanced reminiscent of an American Barleywine Ale. Designed to be cellared. Limited to 2007 bottles.

Bottle, dark clear bronze with a thick beige head. Crystal malt, Amarillo, cascade nose - moderate strength. Very deep toffee, slightly burnt caramel, grapefruit and metallic-piney resinous hop bitterness. Full, round, smooth texture with moderate carbonation. Not that great.

Bottle #1142 of 2007 - Poured slightly cloudy and opaque. Decent head that lingers - off white with large carbonation pockets. Smells sweet with slight nuances of raisin. Not much of a hop presence in the aroma. Rich and impressive first taste - sweet, malty - the commercial description talks about the hops - but rather than impart a distinct taste, I think they do a better job evening out the whopping malt presence. Not at all bitter. A slight alcoholic after taste which I believe is probably much higher than detected (didnt see an abv% on the bottle or in the description - Im guessing 8-9% range??). This is a brew I hope is replicated as well next go round....

22oz bottle-pours a rich, rocky tan head that laces and hazy copper/red color. Aroma is rich sweet medium/dark malt-molasses/sugar, dark fruit-cherries, prunes, secondary resin hops. Taste is velvety rich sweet medium/dark malt-molasses/sugar/chocolate, dark fruit-cherries, prunes, secondary resin hops-bitter, some alcohol. Smooth, mild/OK carbonation. Seems to have aged nicely in just 6 months from other comments.

Bottle 1820/2007. Poured a lightly hazed orange-amber color with an off-white head. The aroma was fairly strong and had notes of sweet aged malt. The flavor too was of sweet aged malt with some citrusy hops mixed in. Warming sensation and medium bodied.

bottle thanks to opaque and cloudy reddish brown pour with a substantial creamy light brown head....aromas of caramel malts, dark fruit, and a light citric zest of some sort. didnt get to much in the way of hops unlike some of the others have experience.....first thing i took notice was of the mouthfeel. pretty nice and creamy in the mouth. hops def. come into play in the flavor profile which adds a slight bitterness. caramel malts play the bigger role....interesting and not too bad overall.

Bottle courtesy of immy. Pours brown with an off white head. Smells of oranges, fruit, caramel, roses, biscuits. Tastes of caramel, hints of hops and molasses and a semi bitter finish. Reminded me of an ESB on steroids. Interesting.

22oz bottle thanks to a trade from Immy. Bottle 281 of 2007. Nutty, hazy brown chestnut color. Tremendously malty aroma with a metallic hint, chocolate and caramel notes as well. The flavor has earthy spicy hops with lots of grain infused malt presence. There is a burnt caramel taste and sweetness but it is balanced by a woody-spicy dryness that is a good counter point. Solid. Dryish full body. Good stuff over all.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2008 First rating 12/29/07: Bottle #995 of 2007. Part 4 of 5 of my barleywine-fest, and also my 99th beer rating. This was an attempt at a barleywine that failed (the successful attempt turned into the Grand Illumination ale). Still, this failure turned out to be a fine brew on its own. Pours mahogany with a bubbly tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, raisins and lemon. The taste is sour and very hoppy, but balanced at the end by coffee and toffee tastes. Hoppiness definitely mellows as it warms. (3.3) Rerate: 4/6/08... Bottle 994 of 2007. Pours a burgundy color with a medium sized frothy head. Aroma is raisins, brown sugar, alcohol. Taste is major hops, brown sugar, alcohol, dark fruits. (3.2)
