I was very pleasantly surprised to try this very robust brown ale. Lots of flavors of bakerís chocolate, smoke and a bit of oiliness. tasted blind I would say itís more of a porter in style. A small amount of hop bitterness adds to the flavor as well. A very good job indeed.
Pours brown with a thin tan head. Smells of sweet malt and earthy. Tastes of caramel, some light spice and a mildly bitter finish. mwelsh13 (499) - Maryland, USA - AUG 13, 2008
Draft poured a deep brown color. Off white head. Roast and coffee flavor and aroma. Like a light porter. Put down four with a southern BBQ dinner. Drake (13647) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 23, 2008
Bottle thanks to maniacís generosity! Pours dark cola/chocolate brown with a medium head that reduces a bit but isnít in a hurry. Dark fruit/raisin aroma is very strong, with some toffee and chocolate. Taste is very strong chocolate with some graininess and alcohol. Damn, this is good.MaltDawg (1344) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - MAY 22, 2008
Funny that this beer goes seven and a half months with no ratings and then suddenly gets three ratings in three consecutive days!
05/21/08 side by side comp with 2007 Tavern Ale. Very dark mahogony.
Big raisin plum and coffee aroma over rich sweetness. Plums raisins and molasses flavors with some coffee.
Surprizingly light mouthfeeel with some cholate and coffee in the finish. Bit thin for all the roasty stuff and maybe a touch of oxidation? Overall quite delicious. I liked this much better than the subsequent release. Thanks to either Butters or Maniac for getting this. Butters (4059) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - MAY 21, 2008
Pours much darker brown and with almost no head. Wonderful chocolate, coffee, roasty tasting and aroma notes. Definitely fits to be a porter more than a brown. Creamy mouthfeel. Of the two, this one is far superior.

RBSG 07 Minneapolis Grand Tasting: Brown, light head and lacing. Nose of bright hops, nutty malts, creamy. The flavor is balanced, nice and malty. Sweet, creamy. Bien. puzzl (3258) - New York, New York, USA - JUL 30, 2007
Theres a lot wrong with this beer. Near black pour (especially for a brown), with a weird, chewy, marshmallowy vegetal aroma. 3 day old bubblegum comes to mind. A bit of caramel in there. Taste is oddly minty, acetic caramel and more off vegetal flavors. Not digging this. Skyview (5927) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - JUL 11, 2007
Sampled at RBSG í07 Grand Tasting room. Thanks to Immy and maniac for sharing. From bottle pours a cloudy dark orangish-brown brew with an average off-white head that dissolves quickly. Aroma of dark malt with scents of molasses, chocolate, and brown sugar. Taste is lightly carbonated, medium bodied with flavors of apple, dark chocolate and flowery hops. Finish is slightly tart with a dry aftertaste. hellomynameis (876) - Mayer, Minnesota, USA - JUL 7, 2007
Brown colored with a bit of a head on top. Spicy hop aromas with a bit of fruit. Some chocolate malt is apparent in the flavor as well as some toffee. hopscotch (11049) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - JUL 7, 2007
Bottle... RBSG 07... Pitch black ale (ok, burnt orange when held up to very bright light) with a small, creamy, beige head. Decent retention. Aroma is pure chocolate! Flavor is a touch tangy (probably from oxidation), lightly sweet and chocolaty with a splash of coffee. Medium to full-bodied and velvety with moderate carbonation. Finishes lightly tangy, mildly bitter and very dry. More like a porter than a brown ale. Very good stuff!
