With the high acholol the beer comes across pretty sweet. There are tastes of chocolate. Because of the sweetness two of us had a Hard time finishing the bottle.
03-02-2018; bottle; at home (bought at Slijterij-Wijnhandel De Bodega, Capelle aan den IJssel, The Netherlands).
Had the beer as Sarphati Oude Olie Grand Cru. The looks of the beer are very nice. The beer has a rich and intense look. The beer has a very dark ruby red, almost purple color. The beer pours hardly any foam, making it almost look like a dark red wine. The beer seems to have a nice cloudiness. I think that this is the darkest Belgian Strong Ale I've ever seen.
The smell of the beer is intense. First thing I notice taking a deep sniff, is the strong alcohol smell. It is so strong...it reminds me a bit of the smell of vodka. Besides this, there is an ensemble of dried fruits. Dried plum, raisin and apricot give some delicious sweet intense concentrated aromas. Together with the sweetness of the malts and a grape-like fresh sweetness, the beer reminds me of a good port or sherry. It has the same intense dried fruit smell, which I personally love. Hops aren't really present in the smell. They might gave a slight earthy touch, that suits the dried fruits quite well. The smell gets more intense over time, as the beer warms up. I like this smell and taste evolution. Nicely done, but it sure is intense. Not for the weak hearted.
The taste of the beer is just as intense. Lovely. Again the strong alcohol, which propels the sweet dried fruit flavours in a nice way. Some malty sweets are present, with some earthy bitter hop notes, but most of the taste is filled with intense sweet dried fruits...apricot, plum and raisin. And some grape. A touch of chocolate completes it. It really reminds me of a good port or sherry. Very well balanced, but the alcohol is almost to strong.
The palate of the beer is nice. Full body, silky smooth texture and low carbonation. The high concentration of alcohol gives a nice tingly to the tongue instead of gas bubbles...but the alcohol is so strong it is almost to strong. The finish of the beer is also intense. The chocolate is quite strong in here, so is the alcohol. Dried fruit is a bit less intense, but still clearly present. The finish has that same thick dried fruit sensation a port or sherry has...intense, full and lovely. I really like this beer. One of the most intense beers I've ever had. Amazing. simontomlinson (714) - Blackburn, Lancashire, ENGLAND - JAN 12, 2018
Frothy beige head left a creamy cover on a very dark brown still body - looks impressive.
Massive aroma of spiced fruit, dates, licorice, booze & mulled wine.
Full bodied, thick, chewy, soft on the palate & spritely on the back. This is so thick, it's like having a meal!
The sweet taste is the as big as the aroma with heavily spiced fruit, pepper, aniseed, alcohol, jam & an almost medicinal tasting long finish.
This is a huge complex beer, a real fireside sipper. culchiem (4294) - Berlin, GERMANY - JAN 5, 2018

Another disappointment. This beer scored so high on ratebeer, but what I got was very sweet and phenolic in both Aroma and flavor. Beerdedone (3496) - Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 12, 2017
