Milk Stouts are brewed with sugar from cows milk to give the beer a sweet, creamy tone. Bristol breweries were once famous for making the best milk stouts around. For our take on the traditional recipe weve used copious amounts of chocolate malts and laced it with vanilla to create a milkshake rich, velvety and satisfying dark beer.

At Hippo Tap Room. Black beer, thin brown head. Hefty aroma of chocolate malt. Taste is rich malt, creamy chocolate, light vanilla. Very mellow but its rich and sweet. Very pleasant and because its not sickly for all the sweetness (certainly when slightly chilled as mine was) you could probably happily spend a night on it.

Batch 24. Malts: Golden Promise, Chocolate, DRC, Roasted Barley, Flaked Malted Oats, Wheat. Yeast: Surebrew YS020. Hop: Mount Hood. Bottle from Bierkoning. Aroma is dark malt, powdery milk chocolate, vanilla, creamy milky lactose, cocoa, oats, nutty notes, hint of roast. Flavour is medium sweet and light bitter. Body is thin, fairly watery, with some milky creaminess and low carbonation. Some nice flavours in there, but a bit too watery for my taste.

Medium body.Feels bigger than the ABV. Sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, milk, dark sugar, vanilla & slightly burnt flavours on the back. Lots of flavour.

This sample bottled 17th March 2016, 4.3%, Motueka, Amarillo, Magnum hops, "Milk Stout Milk Shake". Solid black body, ivory head at first soapy and loose with big bubbles, settling into a nice thin layer, then dissipated. Aroma of coffee and hint of dark soy sauce. Sweet with light chocolate bitterness. Body is delicious and milky with a clean dry finish and slight astringency left on the tongue.
