On tap at the Valencia restuarant. Dark dark brown with a one-finger tan head that left great lacing. Sharp citrusy hops aromas with a strong malt background. Flavors were similar, thought there was an strong sense of roasted malts. Medium bodied, high carbonation, and a slight grapefruit finish. ABUSEDGOAT (2790) - California, USA - JUL 10, 2016
Black pour, huge tan head, good lace/retention. Aroma is lightly roasted, grapefruit, light citrus, caramel. Medium to light body, moderate to low bitterness, quite drinkable but forgettable. arminjewell (9689) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - MAY 7, 2015
Pour on tap at the brewery, dark brownish black pour with dark cocoa, roast, coffee into a bit of yeast, slight dark fruit, hints of citrus peel in there, touch of earth. Taste was a mix of earth, cocoa, roast into some dark coffee, some slight citrus, pine notes, slight earthy, spicy notes, finishing fairly bitter. Poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, earthiness, grapefruit and light pine. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of roasted malt, earthiness, light grapefruit and a hint of pine with a smooth dry lingering roasty finish. daknole (11049) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - JUN 26, 2014
Almost black with a think tan head. Oddball black IPA. Sweet, maple, honey, candy sugar, roasted malt, hops are just too much in the background. Meh.

Crazy bitter choclate maple and nutty taste beer. Brown color. Don't like this. Poured from draft at Barrelhouse 101 in Ventura, California. bb (9695) - Alamo, California, USA - MAY 2, 2013
Draft. dark brown beer with a dark cream head. Grapefruit and ligh summer fruit aroma. Grapefruit and summer fruit flavor with chooclate. Medium bodied. Grapefruit and summer fruit linger with chooclate and light roast. Thisis12ptfont (1207) - Los Angeles, CA, California, USA - NOV 10, 2012
Aroma of deep roast, toasted, caramel, molasses and earthiness. Appears a solid black with nice lacing against the glass. Immensely complex flavors bringing molasses, deep roasted malts and barley and a massive hop bitterness. Overall, Full bodied and full flavored with a deep alcohol sting. Very delicious, a must try. I’d give this an A+ rating. brokensail (16609) - Dublin, California, USA - AUG 1, 2012
Pours an almost black color with a tan head. Nose isn't bad. A touch of fruitiness, mostly citrus, light chocolate, and a touch of roast. Maybe a little bit of tropical fruit. The flavor is somewhat sweet. Light roast, and decently fruity. A bit of toffee, cocoa, and some pine bitterness. Kind of a meh black IPA. Originally reviewed: 3/12/12. Another brewery I made sure to stop by when in the area last week. Unfortunately, 2 of their brews that I wanted to try were gone, so I got this one.
Came out a deep black, with just a touch of light permeating the edges. Fresh hops in the nose with a bit of char on the finish. Pine with a touch of citrus. The mouth was a little thin for the the style. With a higher ABV, I expected a bit more depth to this. The flavors were a little muted. The hops added a bitter quality for sure, but they were lacking in flavor. The beer had a lightly charred finish that I would expect in a beer of this sort, but again, it was tame and a bit underwhelming. This is a one-dimensional beer, that had promise, but lacked in its execution.
