Really want to like this but the coffee and beer don't meld very well together. The coffee - which is delicious - smacks you on the nose and tongue. Then a smooth stout flavor hits you after, which is nice too. But it almost feels like two different beverages here.

A very excellent coffee release lives up to the label and then some. Rich and distinctive coffee aspects do not attempt subtlety but neither it is a one trick pony. I will have to make a note to stop in Sauk City on a future trip and check out more of what is going on just north of Madison.
Aroma / Appearance - Oily black liquid swirls around the glass with a vanilla hued head. A calm presence simmers with chocolately coffee grounds. Rich malts add a nice depth that rests just under the surface.
Flavor / Palate - Straight black coffee with no creamer or milk fills the mouth with a burst of malts minus the kick of caffeine. Dense and refreshing, this one could almost be chewed. Well balanced waves of flavor carry this beer despite it not attempting to be too complicated. One could almost compare it to a local version of Founder’s Breakfast Stout.
On tap at Vintage. Pours a dark brown with a thin white head. Aroma of coffee grounds, roasted malt, espresso, bitter chocolate. Flavor of coffee, roasted nuts, chocolate, roasted malt. Lots of coffee present, delicious!

Tap at Old Fashioned. Opaque black-brown body. Patchy beige head. Pronounced black coffee aroma. Some ale fruit tones underneath the blackness. Medium bodied, easy drinker. OK. Standard. esjaygee (3902) - Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 20, 2013
On tap at Vintage Brewery for the soon to be opened Woodshed Ale House in Saux City. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of strong coffee, deeply roasted malts, chocolate and faint fruit underneath. Taste is coffee all day with some chocolate, and faint citrus way underneath. Acidic and somewhat bitter on the finish.

On tap at Vintage 10/26, coffee stout made with woodshed ipa as well, strange mix but this really worked well. Pours black with a light brown head and a little bit of lacing in the glass, the aroma has a ton of black coffee with some chocolate as well, the flavor has a good amount of chocolate on the front end with some of the bitter coffee grounds in the finish, the finish also has some of the hops coming through at the same time, kind of reminded me of a coffee version of Night Stalker, but more sessionable, really nice.
