Little people from New Zealand drink “Little IPAs” made with New Zealand hops, right?  The up-and-coming Session IPA beer style is characterized by lots of hop flavor and aroma and moderate bitterness, but low alcohol content.  We have used brewing techniques that give the same body as our stronger beers so that this low gravity beer doesn’t appear thin and watery.  All American hops beginning and mid boil, and finished with unique New Zealand hops that give aromas of orange marmalade.

On tap at the pub. Light color, clear orange. Crisp clean drink with a light hop profile and herbal aromas. Session is the name of the experience here.

Half pint at the brewpub. Pours a very cloudy light orange with a white head. Aroma is very grassy, very herbal. Clean hoppiness with a juicy backdrop. Palate is very nice, holds up to any pale ale. Hops are all over the flavor too. Nice, drying finish. Zesty citrus and grassiness. Everything is so clear and well defined. I can’t say this is an IPA, the malts and body just aren’t there. But as far as a pale ale goes, this has all the depth of the best of them. Very, very tasty.

Tried both the cask and draught version side-by-side.

Appearance: Moderately cloudy, straw-hued yellow body with a spray of white seafoam up top.

Smell: Sugar dusting, cereal-scented barley with notes of fresh lemon, florals, and far-off whiff of exotic spice.

Taste: A light taste of humble golden barley with a touch of sweet, though it soon dries out as a trail of pithy citrus with hints of florals and spice roll in. Lightly bitter. Lingering lemon on the drying finish.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium carbonation, whereas the cask version had relatively a light carbonation level.

Overall: Pleasant tasting either way, with just a slight extra spiciness throughout, a faint minerally bent, and gentler carbonation on the cask iteration.
