Idiosynkrasie (7535) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - FEB 16, 2017
500ml bottle [from bartlebier’s surprise box, thanks again!]. Clear, faint, chestnut colour with average to huge, firm, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Strawy, grainy aroma, minimally sulphureous hints of egg, a touch of sauerkraut. Taste is minimally tart, grainy, strawy and roasty dark malty, a grassy hoppy touch, minimally metallic overtones, widely disguised, nuttily and minimally sweet dark malty interlude.

50cl fliptop. Bb07/2017, Edeka Tirschenreuth. - Proof to the locals’ thesis that all bottled, larger brewery Zoigl are bandwagon beers... - Pours an inviting enough deep mahogani-amber. Earthy, sulphurous going on farty aroma of spent plum pudding, old pumpernickel, cow fodder. Regains interest on the palate with some dark bready dryness, then adds very little in the way of fruit, spice or mouthfeel to hold it. Drinkable liquid bread.

TAR (2765) - Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA - DEC 30, 2015
Bottle, best by March 7, 2016: Clear, burnished copper. Sticky and fluffy head. Pleasant aroma of minerals, breadcrust, airy phenols, hazelnut, apricot, spicy Hallertau, burnt toffee and candyish yeast. Hint of rustic sulfur, as well. Loose and prickly carbonation. Quite minerally and bracingly dry, initially. Splash of plum jam gives way to a more acidic fruit dimension akin to plum skin which is offset by a faint punch of melanoidins. Malt is fairly succulent and is cradled beautifully by the very clean fermentation. Assertive snap of herbal and woody Hallertau brings to mind sassafras and licorice root as it stiffens the clean and firm body. Nice and peppy throughout, owing to the abundance of brisk minerals. Well-attenuated finish is pillared by rich breadcrust and a refined medley of soft and starchy pils-derived hay dust textures. No complaints here other than the thin mouthfeel and occasional wax notes. Very fun to smell and quaff, overall. It’s nice to find a bottled Zoigl that exudes authenticity, unlike most of the posers out there. A quality lager.

Bottled, thanks fonefan! Clear nut brown, small head. Caramelly nose. Mid sweet with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Caramelly and moldy with low bitterness. Even being from Windischeschenbach I don’t get any zoigl vibes from this one, more regular over-caramelly dunkel.

11,11,10,10,9,10 - 10,20 - 15/9
