Draught at Beer on the Pier Chicago. Buttery, ESB aroma...very nice. Clear dark amber with a small, off-white whisp. Decent lace. Pretty darn enjoyable. Seemed a little too cold. Solid. Maybe not quite at Fullers ESB level, but close. Seems a little underrated; perhaps my rating was skewed a little by the attractive old English style booth from which it was served.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: FEB 5, 2011 Canned. A dark brown coloured beer which pours quite flat looking. The aroma has some fruity malts but a tin feel to it - more from the pasteurisation than the dispense method - The taste seems quite old aleish with some deep fruits and notes of liquorice but lots of caramel. Decent at first but seems very artificial then becomes very sickly sweet and sugary.Score 2.6
Subsequent ratings scored 2.8, 2.5, 3.1, 2.7 and 3.2. Average becomes 2.8

I wasn’t overly impressed with this english ale that I got on draft; however, it is not my favorite style. Poured a medium dark brown hue and lacked anything noticeable on the nose. Strongly bitter, but not my type of hops. Cool name though, must use the term "Hobgoblin" more often. This term best describes a few people (cough...co-workers..cough) that I know.

This is probably my favorite brewery so far for this style. Smells like a cream ale. Looks good, quite tasty and hopy. A dry, very grainy finish. but a beer I could have again, in moderation.

Bottle from LCBO. Dark, burnished brown with a small head. Aroma is somewhat sweet and roasty, not bad. Flavours of caramel, nut and roasted malt, with a moderately bitter finish. Simple and well-balanced.

Pourd a fairyl dark but clear brown. Aroma of my bottel was lightly skunky thanks to the clear bottle. Not bad enough to really be a problem. Caramel flavors dominate with some roasted flavors in the background. A slightly better finish. A well balanced ale, and not offensive.
