2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dreadful branding and bottle design. But it’s ubiquitous and I think this is because shopkeeper’s think that real ale drinkers and goblins are a good match and maybe even the same thing. I once got hammered on this stuff with the builder that lived next door, and to this day I’ve never had it since.
Anyway - aroma is dark and leathery malt, book lined shelves. Taste a little thin at first and the rich and quite satisfying - good balance of bitter and sweet. Finish not bad. Marked down for appearance as the head quickly dissipates and you are just looking at a dark flat liquid in a glass. Overall - not bad. Not exactly complex. There are better beers of the type but I won’t look down my nose at it any more.

Bottle from my local Tesco. Poured dark ruby brown with a nice sized creamy off-white head. Aroma of dark fruit, malt, toasting, nut, fruit cake and a touch of chocolate. Moderate sweetness and medium bitterness. Full body, oily texture, average to soft carbonation. First rating of the bottled version despite having it a number of times over previous years - first time for a while now and it is still a decent brew. hens (762) - Tallinn, Estonia, ESTONIA - SEP 8, 2017
