Just in time as these animals are headed for extinction. The Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund has partnered with the Wynkoop Brewing Company and have handcrafted an award winning private label beer, which is calling Silverback Smoked Porter. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each pint will go to support the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mountain gorillas are the closest link to mankind and they are on the verge of extinction. With estimated 720 animals left in the world and none are in captivity, MGCF needs your help. Silverback Smoked Porter, a traditional dark brew, will be available July 1st, at the following locations; Wynkoop Brewing Company, Cherry Cricket, Wazee Supper Club, Pearl Street Grill, Phantom Canyon Brewing Company, Gaetanos Italian and Goosetown Tavern.

Strong rauch-smokiness the overwhelms. Deep brown, boarders black with little head. Slightly smokey, but more sweet. I personally have a hard time getting past the smokiness.

I had this beer casked at the brewery and it was delicious, the smokey flavores from the beer melded with the aromas the cask provided and created a delicious flavorful porter.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a dark beige to tan head. Has a big campfire smoke aroma. This is like drinking a glass of smoked salmon. Because it was cask conditioned the body was smooth and velvety. Served at cellar temperature and simply delicious.

On draught at brewpub. Light smoke taste -which I suppose is good since I do not like smoked beers. Medium to light body. Was on cask. Nothing memorable here.

cask at the brewpub - Pours dark brown and smells of smoke and roast malt. It has a smooth, sweet, smoky roast malt flavor. I think its just a little too light on flavor, but still good. Its medium bodied this being the cask version, lightly carbonated.

Included in a sampler at brewpub. Tried several beers on a visit to Wynkoop and I THINK this was one of them. Do not remember anything standing out in particular but they were all well done.
