appearance: dark brown, hint of lighter edges; short tan fizzy head quickly fading. aroma: bitter dark chocolate, molasses, soy sauce, hint of espresso and ash tray. taste: bitter baking chocolate, peat fire, molasses, soy sauce, brown bread. finish: hint of whiskey heat, maybe a touch of vanilla; palate seems a little too prickly and light. notes: In a world of ever-crazier, constantly-one-upping, barrel-aged stouts (not necessarily a good thing), this one didn’t do much to stand out. Palate was too light, flavors just a touch too savory for the style. Aged two years, gift from Sarah for Beersmas.

500 ml. labeled as "Xbeeriment #44". Pour is the deepest black with a lasting, thin and creamy disc of foam. Nose is blackstrap molasses, soy, cookie dough and earthy beef jerky. Tastes of smoked meat, espresso, dark fruit, cookie dough, and earthy leaf. Medium-heavy body is smooth with low-medium carbonation and nice balance. Found this bottle in a small shop, and smoked Stout sounded just right on a snowy night. Imagine my suprise to see it retired. Deep black beer, toasted almond colored head. Aroma is smoke and cookies, a little coffee and chocolate. Taste is vanilla, faint cherry, coffee, dark chocolate, smoke. Palate is a bit thin, carbonation moderate, but nice and soft. Finish is roasty dry. I find this beer to be fairly true to its origin. Like Obama, it seems pleasant enough at first, but ultimately lacking substance. I do like the smoke though.

Lovely aromas of coffee, which also dominates the taste with a little smoke and a little English liquorice. Good and rich with a pleasant hoppy aftertaste. Gentle in whole, in relation to alcohol strength. CObiased (496) - Bayfield, Colorado, USA - APR 16, 2015
Bottle - pours a very dark brown and only a slight head. Wonderful aromas of roasted grain, chocolate, coffee and a hint of smokey earthiness. Nice robust flavors of chocolate, light roast coffee, smoke, earth and some tobacco are layered within a slightly thin body. Opens more as it warms.

Bottle from Brewfest on ’super markdown" though they don’t tell you that the disties are dumping retired old beer. Black with tan head and lace. Smoky oxidized aroma with raisin dark chocolate and roasted coffee. Roasted chocolate coffee subdued fruit woody bitterness with hints of citrus and lingering smoke. Full body creamy. 500 ml bottle from backlog notes, the bottle was labeled #44 Smoked Stout. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small khaki head. The aroma had lightly smoked malts, chocolate, peat, dark fruits, with an earthy character. The flavor is much of the same; light smoke, chocolate, dark fruits, plum, earthy and some roast. (Bottle) Pitch black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with sweet espresso, liquorice, a touch of smoke and soy sauce. Malty, roasted taste with notes of strong black coffee, chocolate truffles, cacao, liquorice, hints of soy sauce, a touch of peat and a generous roasty bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. The smoke character is quite subtle, so it stays fairly well balanced, but still powerful. Very nice.
