Sample as "Xbeeriment Black Force One XO" @ CBC’13.Benzai (16093) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - MAY 10, 2013
Pours pitch black color with a small beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, licorice, cognac and dark chocolate. Flavour of dark berries, coffee, cognac and licorice. Very smooth chocolaty palate, dry woody finish.
Definitely nothing to do with bourbon, a distinct XO dominant brew. can’t quite see the reasoning with the aliasing here. A call for anti-aliasing (pun intended).
Sampled at CBC 2013. Opaque, pitch black colored beer with a large, dense, excellent lacing, fully lasting off-white head. Aroma is moderately malty, roasted malts, chocolate, light to moderately hoppy. Taste malts, roasted malts, lightly earth, bourbon and moderate to heavy bitter. Full body, oily texture, (a bit too) lively carbonation and a bitter finish. Could be a bit better balanced though. It basically has all the ingredients to make a great beer, but somehow they "only" combine to a good beer. lusikka (7819) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAY 9, 2013
Draught @ CBC2013 (as XO, Cognac Barrel Aged Version) on 4.5.2013. Pours a pitch black colour with a creamy white head. Aroma of roasted malts, really strong and pungent cognac and strong herbal notes. Flavour of strong roasted malts, cognac, herbs, plastic and wood. Other off-flavours as well. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel and a roasty, herbal, cognac-driven finish. Horrible balance. I don’t like this at all as cognac basically destroys this beer. Horrible beer. The base beer itself is excellent, this is ruined.tiong (7433) - Espoo, FINLAND - MAY 9, 2013
Since when cognac barrel aged beers are aliased to bourbon barrel aged beers? This beer was listed as "Xbeeriment Black Force One XO" which is aliased to the Bourbon Barrel Edition. Paradox.

Pours pitch black with a smooth foamy head. Aroma of roasty malts, some sweet wooden notes, oak, Hints of cognac and tart fruits. Taste is sweetish, roasty and cognacy with notes of wood and oak. Finish is roasty and smooth with some sweet cognac and stingy tart apples. Quite balanced but a bit tart and sweet cognac is.
On tap at CBC, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chalk, and subdued barrels. Flavour is extremely roasty, as much as the regular Black Force One, with shitloads of roasted malt. The bourbon doesn’t really come through at all. The roast is intense, bordering burnt. Great stuff, but not very different than the base beer.

Draught at CBC. Creamy off-white good mostly lasting head. Black colour. Heavy malty and light hoppy ugly bourbon aroma. Moderate bitter bourbon flavor. Long moderate bitter finish. Creamy palate. Tinco (621) - Linköping, SWEDEN - MAY 5, 2013
(Short review due to the massive amounts of beer I drank during the CBC13.) Very good! faroeviking (11024) - Chupando chellas es como ellas, FAROE ISLANDS - MAR 24, 2013

Draft. A pitch black beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of bourbon, wood, spices, and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, bourbon, spices, alcohol, and wood, leading to a dry roasted and bourbon finish. StoutHead (977) - DENMARK - MAR 20, 2013
On tap at Fermentoren. Pours black with a medium sized tan head. Has a sweet taste of dark chocolate, vanilla, coffee and fruits. Mouthfeel is vinous and full with a long bitter aftertaste of malt, chocolate and vanilla. The bourbon taste really stands out, but somehow it works very well anyway. Super good beer.
Edit: having mistakenly placed my original review under the wrong beer and having to move it, and having tasted the non-barrel aged version in the meantime, I’ve knocked a couple of points off this beer. The barrel aging gives it a taste I can only describe as ’tinny’, and I feel that the "normal" version is slightly more balanced than this. But like I said: it IS a good beer.
