Bottle. Agreed with review by porterhouse previous to mine in large part. Indeed black with brown bear head that dissipates fast and leaves..."lacing"...sorta. Earthy roots flavor, light molasses, and a single invisible hop. watery palate that hits you with a bitter roast and sickening feeling. definitely algae-like, bitter, overripe vegetables. bland despite all the bad flavors and very watery. Extremely dissapointed given the high esteem I heard this was held in by some. Becomes increasinly bitter and dirst/muck tasting as you finish it. Yech. As I finish the dregs, it tastes more and more like malted high fructose corn syrup. This beer is absolutely awful.

porterhouse (1580) - Boothbay, Maine, USA - MAR 5, 2006
(Bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/freeport/ target=blank>Derosier’s) Pours very, very dark brown with a puffy tan head, sort of cratery. Aroma is not good, smells like fish tank algae. Sloppy lacing. Also tastes like algae/ rotting vegetation with some dark molasses trying to fight through in the finish. If you let it warm the molasses part is more upfront and actually pretty good but then you get the algae in the finish. Smooth mouthfeel. Really strange, can’t believe it’s supposed to taste like this.

UPDATED: MAY 29, 2006 Bottle. Poured a dark, dark brown with a medium tan head. sweet malty aroma. Grape, honey and malt flavor. I don’t usually like dark beers but this one is for me. If you don’t like a litle sweetness in your brew then stay away. Not a hot summer day gulp it beer but a nice sippin’ brew. A

Pours black with big brown head. Nose is faint musty hops and soap. Flavor is limited but ok - citrusy hops and faint dark malt. Finish is very faint, chalky dark malt. Does not do it for me.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted. Light roasted malt aroma. Medium body with a thin texture. Moderate sweet toasted malt flavor with an average finish. Drinkable but soft.

Why make a dark beer and not go all the way? The malt presence is there, a little roastyness, but weak. Tastes like someon poured soda water in my stout.

Pours dark, leaves little or no head. Not much flavor but does finish a bit sweet.

GreatLibations (1854) - Last Supper, Arizona, USA - FEB 1, 2006
UPDATED: SEP 11, 2007 This brew pours next to black in color producing only a one finger, short lived froth that leaves behind a thin yet full ring of lace. Aromas are mild w/ a roasted malty sweetness. Medium nectar w/ ample, cotton soft residual effers. This is actually a nice brew. Only mildly sweet w/ a defined yet mild roast component. Nuances of cocoa, cakebread, and roasted molases. The finish is bittered nicely leaving a lingering fruity asprin tingle. Overall: the mild sweetness is blanced by a mild asprin hop bittering unit. It quenches a thirst.

alc/cherry nose, syrupy, black body w/ no head, candy like flavor, sweet, slightly tart finish, concord grape finish, bubble gum, the first few sips were interesting, but after the glass is 1/4 gone, it tastes like a dull sugary carbonated glass of ass puree, wish I knew the style at all... the schwarzberrys taste like schwarzberrys!
