Can: Dark black colour with a beige heavy heads that quickly fades. Burnt coffee aroma. Taste is initially strong reminding of a stout but it is quite thin and boring. kseecs16 (1216) - Naperville, Illinois, USA - MAR 13, 2006
Bottle. King Corona Cigar’s in Tampa, FL. Poured about as black as it gets with a brown foamy head that faded rather fast and left some lacing. The aroma was sweet and syrupy and acted as a prelude to the surprisingly sweet flavor. Overall the flavor was pretty subdued but overridingly, there was some bitterness at the conclusion, but it struggled to linger and was overpowered by the sweet molasses-like flavor. A bit thin in the mouth, but smooth. Just alright to me. Fantomas23 (463) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 12, 2006
There’s a picture on this page. It looks like that. And its taste has almost the same number of dimensions. If you read the Commercial Description, you should ask yourself: if something had extravagant aromas and exceptional mouthfeel, would so much effort have to be put forth by their marketing department to let you know that? I was totally ho-hummed by this one. Likeburning (149) - Franklin, Tennessee, USA - MAR 10, 2006
Poured a dark almost black red color, with a little bit of a medium tan head. The aroma was sweet and malty, but there were also faint traces of alcohol. The taste was chocolate with a lighter body than the color suggests. Sweet with a hint of something I can’t place. xproudfoot (750) - Paleolithic, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 8, 2006
Bottle. Agreed with review by porterhouse previous to mine in large part. Indeed black with brown bear head that dissipates fast and leaves..."lacing"...sorta. Earthy roots flavor, light molasses, and a single invisible hop. watery palate that hits you with a bitter roast and sickening feeling. definitely algae-like, bitter, overripe vegetables. bland despite all the bad flavors and very watery. Extremely dissapointed given the high esteem I heard this was held in by some. Becomes increasinly bitter and dirst/muck tasting as you finish it. Yech. As I finish the dregs, it tastes more and more like malted high fructose corn syrup. This beer is absolutely awful.

(Bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/freeport/ target=blank>Derosier’s) Pours very, very dark brown with a puffy tan head, sort of cratery. Aroma is not good, smells like fish tank algae. Sloppy lacing. Also tastes like algae/ rotting vegetation with some dark molasses trying to fight through in the finish. If you let it warm the molasses part is more upfront and actually pretty good but then you get the algae in the finish. Smooth mouthfeel. Really strange, can’t believe it’s supposed to taste like this. Fightfire4beer (132) - Virginia, USA - FEB 21, 2006
UPDATED: MAY 29, 2006 Bottle. Poured a dark, dark brown with a medium tan head. sweet malty aroma. Grape, honey and malt flavor. I don’t usually like dark beers but this one is for me. If you don’t like a litle sweetness in your brew then stay away. Not a hot summer day gulp it beer but a nice sippin’ brew. A jgentgesdo (694) - Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA - FEB 21, 2006
Pours black with big brown head. Nose is faint musty hops and soap. Flavor is limited but ok - citrusy hops and faint dark malt. Finish is very faint, chalky dark malt. Does not do it for me. SSSteve (4006) - - FEB 20, 2006
UPDATED: FEB 28, 2006 pale lager aroma. grainy with some hops. appearance is black but ruby when held to light. big thick rocky tan head. lacks a full body. tastes like grape juice. dark disguised lager. Tmoney99 (14864) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - FEB 14, 2006
Bottle. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted. Light roasted malt aroma. Medium body with a thin texture. Moderate sweet toasted malt flavor with an average finish. Drinkable but soft.
