UPDATED: JUN 4, 2005 Bottle : Had this at Sushi Samba. Not much of an aroma. Smells of some roastiness. Pours and looks like a stout. Tastes nothing like. I thought it was pretty watery. Roasted chocolate with a slight bite at the end. Not much complexity to this beer. Wouldnt try again. TheDean (786) - MIlwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 30, 2005
Interesting auroma, smells like spent coffee grounds that have been left out for a month. Almos the perfectpour though (just a little more head would do it). WOW, is this beer SWEET. Taste like an Eisbock with about a dozen sugar cubes added. Not a big fan. Lizabeth (360) - east falmouth, Massachusetts, USA - MAY 21, 2005
Bottle. Very black opaque body with a thin dark tan head. Faint licorice and cola nose. Taste is burnt toast, figs and Moxie, all subdued. A disappointing beer. KAggie97 (3529) - Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA - MAY 20, 2005
UPDATED: MAY 21, 2005 Pours a thick, midnight black. Aroma is a field with cow manure dispersed intermittently among dew-soaked grass. Taste is weak hops, semi-sweet malt, and Sweet-N-Low. Tastes like a store brand version of Lone Star. Not good. Avoid. Stick to topless women and carnivals, Brasil; you don’t do beer well. TChrome (1481) - North Richland Hills, Texas, USA - MAY 14, 2005
Nice looking beer pouring almost black with a well retained tan colored head. Aroma is benign. Flavor is a decent amount of sweet malt and just a touch of smoke. Very easy drinking. Good, especially for such low ABV.

I first had this beer years ago at a Christmas tasting (well before my Ratebeer days), and now I have it again. This was my tenth schwarzbier, I think, and it isn’t the top of the category, to be sure. Nice label. Very suppressed aroma, and a light cardboard flavor (moderately sweet) are all that come out of the blackness. Schwarzbiers play such a mindgame, since you expect so much flavor from such a malty brew, but then you get a much lighter, less bountiful drink. This one came out as something like a Shiner Bock with food coloring. Not bad, just not worth having again, all things considered. Odeed (1806) - Bakersfield, California, USA - MAY 5, 2005
black body with a light brown head.lots of salt in the aroma.roasted malts and a tiny bit of choolate in the flavor.not bad stuff. Newbie (25) - Denver, North Carolina, USA - MAY 5, 2005
Has a dark black color with a nice dark tan head. Licorice aroma. Chocolate and anise flavor. TerryR (391) - Oswego, Illinois, USA - MAY 3, 2005
Black with a nice tan head. Malty, sweet aroma. Flavor is roasted malt and sweet chocolate. Smooth, full body. Dry, slightly bitter finish. Very nice. OhioDad (2492) - Hilliard, Ohio, USA - APR 19, 2005
Pours almost black very dark brown. Decent Tan head that hangs around for a bit. My glass had almost no aroma. Maybe a little malt and something a little sweet but not much. The flavor is mostly roasted with a hint of chocolate. On the palate it is more watery than a porter or a stout and kind of dry on the finish. Not a bad beer to try. I had no idea what to expect when I picked this up. I’ve definitely had worse.
