Fresh bottle but not very impressive. Hardly any nose whatsoever. Rich, dark appearance but a thin head that doesn’t coat much. Tastes bitter due to the roasted malt rather than the hops, I suspect. Frankly, it tastes like a cold cup of joe mixed with half a bottle of flat Pepsi topped off with a couple of teaspoons of sugar stirred in. Not awful, just not near as good as the style would suggest. jercraigs (10374) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 20, 2005
Bottle of unknown vintage @ Chester’s in Hamilton. Black body with ruby tinges on the edges and a good sized beige head. Mild roast and notes of dark chocolate accenting sweet malt in the aroma. Flavour is similar, sweetly malty with a soft roast throughout. Robust. Medium to full bodied. Surprisingly good, I wasn’t expecting much. Black w/ rocky finger of brown foam. Sweet, malty aroma of licorice, milk chocolate, & caramel. Medium, somewhat syrupy feel. Flavour is semi-sweet w/ a nice light roastiness & notes of licorice, molasses, milk chocolate, & cedary hops. Gromit (479) - Port Orchard, Washington, USA - MAR 17, 2005
I tried this a few years ago when it first came out and I thought it was watery crap. I must have had a bad bottle as this isn’t entirely crappy.
Pours a pitch-black color with a nice tan head (after a vigorous pour) which left a very nice lace down the glass. It’s already scored higher than the last time I rated it.
Aroma is very sweet, almost too sweet, actually, with some serious fruits hiding in the background.
Flavor is also very sweet with both dark fruits (dates) and some lighter ones (apricots, strawberries?). It kind of reminds me of a wine cooler or malternative, as in "Seagrams Black Cherry" or something like that, only not nearly as crisp. Eh: not bad, but I’m not a fan of the flavor, and it’s too sweet for the style (Schwarzbier).
Palate is creamy, almost like a Sweet/Oatmeal Stout, but kinda sickening-sweet. Overall, I’m glad I gave this another shot as I had a bad representation before, but this definately is not my cup of beer.

Black beer. Minimal head. Dark alcohol aroma. Light body. Delicate caramel flavour. BeerPrince (1701) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 7, 2005
Black body with a tan head. Aroma is slightly hoppy, llicorice and caramel malts. Flavour is ratsed with some chocolate but a little thin and lacking in body, not that smooth either. Slight bitter finish. goldtwins (4320) - Nesconset, New York, USA - MAR 1, 2005
Poured a very dark brown color. Aroma was malty with floral notes. Flavor was short but sweet. Caramel and fruit. Medium bodied with a smooth clean finish. SoLan (1550) - Florida, USA - FEB 27, 2005
Black pour, no head. Roasted malt with coffee and herbal notes in the nose. Flavor is sweet then roasted then coffee/chocolate. Medium body. Complex. Better than expected. RateandPillage (426) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - FEB 27, 2005
Pours black with a brown head. Fruity, molasses aroma. Very unique flavor. Malty and slightly smoky, but not overly so on either. Very smooth. I kind of like this one.
