Lovely savoury aroma, some soy, a bit ofchocolate too. Very deep red. Lovely chocolatey roast in the taste too. Wonderfully bitter finish, resins hang around on the tongue for a very long time. A lovely rich roasty brew.

Dry roasty aroma. Harsh burntness, balance low, drinkability low. Not tasty, just harsh. Don’t particularly like this sample. Averaging the two.

Bottle at home. Pours black with hints of red against the light. Aroma of roast malt, cocoa and peppery hop. Initial sweetness gives way to bitterness. Bottle. This is just called Black rather than Black Velvet.
Appearance - dark brown to black with a lovely fawn head.
Nose - light pine but predominantly caramel shortbread.
Taste - more nice biscuit and caramel notes. On the finish there’s a little smoke and even charcoal.
Palate - medium bodied with a decent yet crunchy texture and a long dry crunchy finish.

Many thanks to Rian for this bottle! Smooth malty nose. The beer starts smooth but intense. Round floral, fresh and smooth. Aroma: dark grain, cereal and caramel malts, molasses, toasted malts. Appearance: very dark brown, medium, creamy, beige head. Taste: medium bitter. Palate: floral hops coming up very quickly, bitters intensify, roasted malts, filter coffee, bitter cacao, very bitter and dry finish. Bottle shared at CBC CW during The Cad 10yr celebrations, London. Thanks to Leighton for this one. It pours a dark copper color with a small tan head. Aroma is roasty, with notes of dark fruit, toffee, wood. Taste is lightly tangy dry and medium sweet, with more notes of wood, toffee, cocoa. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Bottle from the brewer’s own stall at the Thame Food Festival. Brown with a thick beige head. Light chocolate raisins balanced against lots of wood. Some underlying toffee makes it mellow, whilst at the same time tasty. Another great beer fron XT.
