Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel notes to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare (whose original brewery stood just blocks from where ours is now). Our Tavern Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth, and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish

Nice Porter, not too overpowering with notes of oatmeal, a little light on the side for my taste however that should be a given as it is advertised as using George Washington's recipe from almost 250 years ago. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the brewery. Pours a very dark brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast and cocoa. Slick mouth, chocolate, roast, licorice, light finish, very good.

Definitely one of the better porters I’ve had in a long time. I sampled this on draft at the City Tavern in Philly. The beer poured a black color with a light tan head. There was plenty of beautiful lacing happening inside the glass. The nose featured some caramel, vanilla, chocolate, roasted barley and a slight hint of sweet alcohol. The body was perfectly drinkable and smooth, with flavors of chocolate, cream, vanilla, caramel, fruit, very light hops, toasted bread and a hint of booze.

Dark with some red, some head. Nose is toasty, molasses, a bit of fruit. Taste is roasty, sweet malt, some fruit and coffee on the finish. Very little carbonation. It's ok.

Pours black with a one finger tan head with nice lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, dried fruits, molasses, caramel, and sweet malts. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a medium body with a creamy mouthfeel and a mostly sweet, medium finish. Overall, a pretty nice porter that is easy drinking, smooth, and sessionable for the style.
