Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel notes to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare (whose original brewery stood just blocks from where ours is now). Our Tavern Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth, and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish

Pours dark brown, decent head. Medium carbonation. Roasted coffee beans, spices on the nose. Coffee, hints of chocolate, cinnamon stick, robust hoppy bitterness. Pretty good porter.

Robust and full bodied. Very enjoyable porter. Almost a sweet stout. Toast no harshness and enjoyable. Nice head. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bitter, with aftertaste. 7% ABV well hidden. Like the Presidential series and the labeling. Regardless, not good enough to drink again. Sorry George...

Dark mahogany brown with a delicate one-finger head and nice lace. Aromas of roasted malt, cocoa powder, molasses and anise. Taste is similar with the roasted malt, and cocoa accompanied by leather, licorice, roasted coffee and dark fruit. Medium body, low carbonation, creamy mouthfeel and a dry finish.

Rich garnet brown, thin light brown head. Strong caramel aroma, vanilla-coffee notes, almost earthy. Smooth cocoa vanilla hops flavors. Fairly light mouthfeel.

Bottle. Hazy brown color with a khaki head and nice lacing. Aroma and flavor were coffee, caramel, roasted malt and some chocolate. As it warms, I get some dark fruit. Not my favorite porter but I can drink it. Average

I poured it from the bottle into a glass. It pours dark brown and black with a tan head and lacing. The aroma is coffee and fruit. The taste is coffee, chocolate, vanilla and tobacco. It’s smooth and creamy with a nice balance of bitterness and subtle sweetness. This is a nice porter and worthy of having George Washington’s picture on it.

Poured dark cherry brown - like a cherry cola; medium head with multi-sized bubbles. Caramel raisins, sweet and malty, (very) lightly roast coffee. Body was a little on the thinner side. Finished with some sourness.

Bottle. Well finished porter. Sweet aroma, smooth palate. Clean finish. No off flavors. Not punchy or overly boozy. Not a centerpiece offering, in that it won’t win awards for stand-out flavor, but very smooth and drinkable, but likely much better for regular drinking instead of a tasting session.

MadRobin (2988) - Silver Spring, Maryland, USA - AUG 12, 2016
Poured from 12 oz. bottle. Opaque (except around edges), dark rusty brown with a fine, tan head and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, cocoa, molasses and licorice. Taste of roasted malt, leather, cocoa, licorice, roasted coffee and a little dried fruit. Medium/full body and medium/low carbonation. Pretty interesting, roasty and complex porter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
