Keg - O’Carrolls, Auckland. As Behemoth Wade Brown Ale at 5.5%; forgive me if I’ve entered it under the incorrect listing. A murky brown beer with a fine and loose though lasting and lacing soapy beige head. Good coffee in this, both on the nose and palate, though mostly present in terms of the later. A light dose of nutty malts and also a delicate vanilla-y sweetness in the mid to end. Some juicy mid-fruits coming through. Not overly bitter but good length and definition to the roast and coffee. Medium-ish body, soft carbonation and an enduring bittersweet finish. Well balanced between the coffee and malts so as to not let the coffee character dominate. Yeah, I could happily sink a few of these. It’s got character but isn’t in-your-face intense with the coffee making it damn sessionable. Travlr (25745) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - AUG 6, 2013
Cask handpull at Rogue & Vagabond in Wellington. Hazy amber brown color, fluffy beige head. Aroma of nutella on toast. Taste is cocoa and toast. Tasty. Light body. Jimthechap (2064) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - JUL 13, 2013
Hazy deep mahogany in colour with very little head, but what is there is greyish-off white. I’ll go on a limb as say this isn’t the best looking beer. However, Yeastie Boys don’t do bad beer and a short sniff of this beer reveals freshly ground coffee and dark chocolate. It smells similar to Mikkeller Texas Ranger but for the Jalapeno peppers. This is a smell that I rather like. A taste reveals just the same sort of flavours with silky sweetness. I rather like my learned friend’s analogy of five coffees and a sugar. I have to say though, I’m not enormously enamoured of this beer, probably irrespective of further conditioning. beerledgend (1196) - Waterloo, Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - OCT 29, 2012
Dark brown/black in colour with toffee coloured head. Big coffee aroma. Is like a short black with 5 sugars. Big coffee bitterness. Pleasant but not one that shout from the roof about. ciaranc (1102) - Dublin, IRELAND - SEP 8, 2012
Deep black brown with little to no head. Huge earthy roast coffee nose. Big, full body, a lovely creamy palate, medium carbonation, with a hint of sweet malt in the taste, along with coffee, coffee and more coffee. Finish is long and moderately bitter, with a bit more coffee for good measure. Very nice indeed.
