The gap between crack and thunder is closing in... Brewed on subsequent days, the Yakima and Motueka Monsters are an artistic examination of terroir. Both beers use 93% Golden Promise malt and 7% Caramalt. Both beers are hopped to 56ibu with around 9g/L of hops. Both beers are fermented with a US ale yeast. Motueka Monster is hopped with Southern Cross, Nelson Suvin and NZ Cascade hops (that’s right, no Motueka!!). * New Zealand’s first Hurricanes catchment intra-zone semi-professional collaboration (between Yeastie Boys and

I only got to have this out of the bottle... I preferred the bottled version of this over the bottled version of Yakima Monser - but the kegged version of Yakima Monster was nicer than this. Really savory NZ hop goodness exploding from the glass. A great beer.

Last bottle of the NZUS contest between the Mot and Yak Monster. Golden coloured with a fine white head that persists long after the glass has finshed. Nose is all passionfruit, tangerine and gooseberry, sort of like an Anzac Wallace ’Utu’ NZ hop assault. The golden promise comes to the fore, briefly, in the taste with a lovely slice of malt and is then consumed in a sea of bitterness with a little astringency that finishes with a sip of passion fruit syrup. Smooth as to swallow and is like a little slice of New Zealand beer love.

Clear golden. Big NZ hop aroma. Subtle dry armpits, a touch pine resin. Gig up front bitterness, grepefruit pith dominaats, flickers of malt sweetness and a drying finish.

beerledgend (1196) - Waterloo, Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 26, 2010
Big floral/grapefruit hop aroma. Hazy orange/gold colourwith thick creamy white head. Huge hop flavours with smooth well balanced mouthfeel. Hop flavour not too over powering. Could eaily have a few more of these.

grapengrain (124) - Havelock North, NEW ZEALAND - JUL 13, 2010
Really clean and fresh malt - exceedingly ’PALE’. Vibrant NZ hops abound - probably more hop charicter than needed as the fresh hopping becomes astringent.

Bottle from the Beerstore (NZ). Pours a nice pale/golden yellow with good head retention. Big citrus nose. Medium but nice full bitterness in taste. A throughly enjoyable beer to savor while enjoying a good laugh watching Black Books. Cheers to the Yeastie Lads for another quality beer. Yakima tomorrow night.

Pours golden, white head with good retention & lacing. Aroma is subdued, very grassy hops. Kinda like a bag of hops smells like.
Initially a big whack of bitterness hits you, leading into intense classic NZ passionfruity and grassy intense hop character. A hint of sweetness comes with the fruit, but is then overridden by the huge alpha in this beast. Finish is long and bitter.
A very out of balance monster, and for that reason I love it.

sdriessen (320) - Dunedin, NEW ZEALAND - JUN 29, 2010
Lovely NZ aroma.
Flavours have a lot of hoppy bitterness, and only a little malty sweetness. I like these NZ hops! Will be good to compare with Yakima Monster.
Strong, yet refreshing with a big bitter finish.
