Black pour with a thick off white head. Coffee, chocolate and fruity, piney aromas. Taste is coffee, toasty malt, with a little fruit underneath, and finishes slightly bittersweet dark chocolate

Aroma is all dark chocolate coffee and cocoa until a plummy fruitiness rolls on in. Same with the taste, the fruitiness the bitterness and the sweetness all suddenly unite in the middle, then unfortunately the carbonation crashes in like a herd of monkeys with Tourrettes and all the flavour runs and hides from the commotion, only to reappear as a streak of steadily darkening chocolate with sour, yellow edges in the aftertaste

UPDATED: MAR 29, 2013 A pleasant black IPA made more interesting by the chance of comparing the brew to the Yakima (US) hops version. Personally, I prefer that one to this one with the Motueka (NZ) hops but wouldnt pass on it if offered.

Aroma is of hops, with a bit of roasted dark chocolate. Bitter hoppiness at the start, but doesn't persist to the aftertaste. Roasted dark chocolate malts that appear to show up more in the aftertaste, whilst the hops dominate the start. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

1L squealer from IBS. Pours brown/black with med latte colour head. Smells fruity hops, biscuits, malt and slightly toasty. Tastes.. some fruity hops, malty chocolate, hints of chocolate-ish roasted coffee, some sweetness and bitterness to finish. Like.

330mL bottle. Pours black with an off white head and a coffee bean aroma with slight floral hints. Has a floral like flavour with a bitter coffee backing. Ok but i much prefer the US hopped version.

330ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a huge off-white head, which lasts very well and leaves very good lacing. Pine, mango and melon hops aromas sit over a base of dark chocolate and rye bread malt notes. Potent mango and tropical hops up front lead into darker sweetened cocoa and fresh rye bread. Bittersweet cocoa mixes with pine hops in the finish. This is an enjoyable black IPA; dark and bitter enough for Edgar Allan Poe, but kicked along by fruity NZ hops, which give it a lovely balanced feel.

The first in the trilogy.
Big pffft as the cap comes off followed by a thick vapour of pent up gas; bitter coffee bean already recognisable in the air. Pours black with a darkest tinge of brown in the very shallows. Heavy yeast pack disperses to make it opaque. Good two inches of lasting, messy loose foam atop mists up the glass. As expected there is a bitter, scorched coffee note in the aroma giving it a slightly metallic zing. Forgivable this is though as there is a gesture of pineneedle, spruce and caramelised fruit such as figs, grapefruit and blood orange. Chewing through the foam the beer is sprightly on the tongue, pasty in mouthfeel and dry mid-palate on. Heady coffee flavour dominates here (unsure if they intended it so!) with a burnt, smoky bonfire edge that is both pleasant and not always common of style. Enough fruit here to bring it back to earth. A fair lift of Chenin Blanc and lime, soft mint and orange. Good body as it warms some more. The tail seems more malt bitter than hop with lasting coffee, smoke and ash. Near empty I am getting more wine notes coming through. I like it. Whilst one was enough it harbours a good roundness and balance of flavour with a continuous, wafting aroma. Good start!! (33cL, no date stamp, Cellarbrations Carlisle)

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Black pour with a foamy off white head. Nose shows sweet citric fruits, vanilla and bitter espresso. Taste is coffee forward with some sweetness and loads of hoppy bitterness behind it all. Roasted malts in there. Too overcarbonated for my liking. A little carbonation is good but this puts me off the beer a little as it muddles the flavours when it foams

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2013 Bottle from mane liquor. Pours a black with nice foamy head. Aromas of malty biscuitness, slight citric sweetness and a bit of roastyness. Taste is mainly roasted chocolate, bit of malt and some other sweetness I cant pin-point. Pretty solid beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
