Launched 2008 as a 5.2% abv beer. Changed to 6% in 2009.
NZ & rest of the world brewed at Invercargill Brewery. UK & Europe brewed at Brewdog, Aberdeenshire.
A juxtaposition of styles: fresh and hoppy, yet dark and rich. Mindbendingly delicious.
2009 release information:
Winter 2009 sees the return of Yeastie Boys much loved debut beer - New Zealand’s original ’Black IPA’. This year’s vintage is built upon the same malt base as the original but has fired up the ’chocolate and orange character’ with more NZ Cascade hops and a zesty fistful (or 10) of imported Styrian Goldings. At 6.0%abv and 50ibu it is rich, hoppy and way too drinkable.
2008 release information:
The first seasonal release from the newest kids on the local craft beer block. ’Pot Kettle Black’ is an unusually hoppy rich and robust porter balancing the delectable dark malt flavours of traditional porter with fruity hop characteristics usually associated with modern craft pale ales. The result is a rare beer indeed: moreish, nutritious and delicious.
Tech info: ABV = 5.2%, OG = 1061, IBU = 47.
Ingredients: Malt: NZ Pale Malt, Melanoiden Malt, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent Malt. Hops: Nelson Sauvin, New Zealand Styrian, New Zealand Cascade (organic, to please the brewing gods).

Earthy hop aroma with a little spicy-ness. Initial sweetness, followed by some citrus and spicy hop, with a firmly roasty and bitter finish. Staunch flavours but balanced well with nothing OTT.

13/20 nice fresh tasting porter - almost like a black ipa, big taste, perfect abv

shoestring (435) - larkhall, SCOTLAND - DEC 28, 2017
Nice looker. Deep tan head . Starts ok but just lacks depth for me. Liked it but wanted it to go deeper into chocolate and cocoa. Just to much tartness for me to really love it.

330ml bottle from Home Bargains (£0.89):
This one was a beer that definitely started well, pouring with quite a nice body & head before the nose came through with some subtle hops, pine & even some light tropical notes towards the end; there was a few darker malts & earthy touches at this point to though. Come the taste the beer decided to go in a different direction with cocoa & chocolate flavours dominating alongside some coffee & a few hints of sweetness nearer the end.

Black color with a fine tan head. Ok lacing. Ok intensity in the aroma. Medium body and a smooth carbonation level. Creamy texture. Ok balanced sweetness. Coffee, roast, fruity and some chocolate in the flavor. Nice tasty beer, but not an black ipa.

330 ml can from Draper's Arms,Peterborough. BB 28/12/2017. Dark mahogany/black,beige head. Nose - initially citrus and pine then coffee. Taste - coffee, roasted malt and a pinch of ash.

Hopverdju (1642) - BELGIUM - DEC 4, 2017
Van 't vat. Zwart bier met ecru schuim. Geur: geroosterde mout, licht aards, noterig. Smaak: koffie, licht zoet, korst van goed gebakken brood. Medium koolzuurprikkel. Afdronk: licht bitter, kruidig. Black IPA? Een zeer zachte dan! Het is gewoon een aangenaam drinkbaar zwart bier.

Beerhunter111 (23265) - Beerland, GERMANY - DEC 4, 2017
Sampled @ Billie's Craft Beer Fest 2017. A black beer with a mid sized most good lasting beige head. Aroma of citrus hops, dark malt, some Chocolate. Taste of mild dark roasted malt, coffee, citrus hops, medium bitterness.

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2017 dark grassy beer, good strong flavour, rich chocolate colour with pale head

Beer5000 (6821) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - NOV 22, 2017
Bottle. Unclear dark brown body with a small, lacing beige head. Distinct aroma of dark, medium roasted malt, grassy hops and light fruit. Flavor is dark roasted malt with grassy bitterness, some fruit and a hint of cooked vegetables. Medium body and average aftertaste. Decent but a bit ordinary and a little negative feelings for the vegetable part.
