COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A celebratory beer by Yeastie Boys. They said it couldnt be done, that it would be undrinkable and, to be fair, many of them still do... But we like to do our own thing. This one-off batch of imperial-strength Rex Attitude is a self-indulgent celebration of being awarded the Morton Coutts Trophy for Innovation at BrewNZ 2011. Dedicated to all the peat freaks who have let us know how much they enjoy Rex: your love helps us through the hate - thank you.

10%ABV. Smoked ale. Poured out cloudy amber. 12 SRM. Nose is smoky with aromas of wax paper, candle wax, plasticine, silly putty. After much soul searching, the aroma of Band Aids comes to mind. Mouthfeel is thick and juicy. Palate also has some funk to it with a plasticine flavor, there is also a strong medicated plaster, bandaid flavor. Smoke is not wood smoke, but more peaty and earthy. Alcohol hits hard in the middle of the palate and slides very nicely into the other bitter flavors of the hops which are resinous and charcoal bitter. Overall, what stands out about this beer for me is the motor oil-like, plasticine, peat, mud and earth flavors. Good if you like deep earthy flavors. Not so much for me.

Intensely smokey, burnt wood, oak smoked ham. Hazy gold, medium, creamy, white head. Light bitter. More smoked grain, meats, savoury, sweet malts, molasses, citrus fruits, soft carbonation, medium bodied, bitter and salty finish. Quite intense Smoked, indeed a delight for the peat-head. Bottle from HonestBrew, Crystal Palace.

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. Golden coloured with a thin white head. It has a very strong iodine and fruity flavour followed by an earthy, floral and iodine finish. Ok.

A thick orange color with an equally thick taste. Sweet taste with a huge amount of smoked peat. The beer base is better than the original.

330ml bottle. Sticky sweet caramelised pork ribs in a beer. Plenty of charcoal, sweet caramel, savoury meat and so much smoke. A little fruity apple too. Unique, sure. Fun, I guess. I quite enjoyed the half bottle I drank, but I dont think I could have finished a whole bottle, and I dont think Id ever want to drink it again.

Whoa, no holding back on the smoke here. Zero balance. Aroma is smoke. Appearance was a muddy Amber and a small head that quickly faded. Flavor is a not too Pleasant combination of smoke soap and more bitter than a little sweet with some carbonation. Long unpleasant Smoky bitter finish.

330ml bottle from Honest Brew. Pours a misty gold, aroma is turps, booze and peat. Taste is secondary school chemistry lesson, boozy peat, smoke, TCP with a slick mouthfeel. Was tough to finish this, but with no other beers to hand that were cold, finish it I did.

330ml bottle into pint glass. Smells like alcohol, BBQ sauce and medicine. Looks like industrial waste water, translucent orange/brown with wisp of white film on top. Taste is (very) dark fruit and dry wood. Peat is everywhere. The finish is long, the smokiness continues and is joined by raisins, nail polish, wood shavings and alcohol. The opposite of easy-drinking. Interesting but not enjoyable.

Bottle. Light brown with a small head.Very unusual flavour than can only be described as earthy which came as a bit of a shock. Took some time to dawn on me that I really liked it. Out of the ordinary and worth persevering with.
