a very creamy brew but similar to other sweet and dry stouts lacks depth of flavor. hints of chocolate certainly but overall nothing spectacular. Brad (364) - Berkley, Michigan, USA - JUN 6, 2005
Bottle: Pours a thickish nearly black body, with a big tan rocky head. Aromas of milk chocolate on top, with darker more bitter chocolates and toasted malts sharing the background. Flavor was structured just like the aroma, sweet mellow milk chocolate up front (like cold cocoa), with a toastier flavor and soem bitterness coming in at the end. Overall though, the flavor was very watery, and not as thick as I would’ve though. Short aftertaste of dark chocolate, washed away by all the water. sirchris (42) - Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 6, 2005
Black body with tan head. Aroma reminded me of oatmeal with brown sugar. Wonderful thick mouthfeel. Taste is reminiscent of chocolate milk. There is a slight roasted/coffee taste as well. Stew41 (2021) - Phuket, THAILAND - JUN 5, 2005

Nothing lost on fresh bottles to my tastes. Plenty of roast and chocolate on the nose; remarkably fresh. More settled and dry in the palate as the mildly tannic roast takes hold. Good presence and length. Not particularly chocolately but the fresh bottles aren’t either.

Struggled to hit the sweet stout mark in my opinion, let alone display any noticeable chocolate flavours. On pouring big fizzy head action early but disapated to leave a nice creamy, thin head. Quite an expressive nose, slightly burnt malts, some sweet notes and feels a touch extracted (if that’s possible to pick from the nose). Palate was a bit of a letdown early and did get better. Very fizzy early, killing the stout notes. Settled down as it warmed up, showing some more stout character and a faint chocolatre note. Just not enough to justify the tag IMHO.
Memo to Huyghe: this is how to make a chocolate-flavoured beer. This is a gloriously rich dessert-like chocolate stout, immensely satisfying in small measures. Ebony colour with a tall, lacing head. The aroma is exactly as you might expect: creamy chocolate, coffee, roast barley, sugar. Full-bodied and creamy with a restrained bitterness. The flavour is sweet but not sickening (like Youngers Sweetheart Stout), with notes of fudge, mocha and bitter chocolate. A great balancing act.

Pours black with a frothy tan head. Light bitterness. Flavor is very much sweet, dominated by chocolate malts. There was also, just a hint of fruitiness which I liked. Lively palate. Really delicious beer. My favorite stout to date. barenada (211) - Georgetown, Indiana, USA - MAY 29, 2005
(draft) Good head, good lacing. Subtle chococate aroma and more subtle chocolate flavor. Nothing else to distinguish it at all. It did kind of grow on me though. DonMagi (5593) - bantervile, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - MAY 29, 2005
UPDATED: AUG 7, 2007 This is one of my first good stouts and i had to have two to get the taste for it.
Aroma is slightly burnt malt and coffee, taste is bitter coffee and bitter chocolate, nice. Quite a mouthful, not overly thick, but one to sip, though once i finished one and had to have another.
Around good beer, one to try again if i can find it.
Re-Rating : This is an amazing stout, iv had a few now and its become one of my favourate beers. I think it should br drunk from the bottle though, seems to have more flavour that way.
Amazing stuff if u can get your hands of it. can8ianben (1538) - State College, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 29, 2005
I didn’t find much more here than a smoky malt flavour and a watery body. It is more than a guiness, but not by much. I appreciate the chocolate malt, but wish there was more to it. Overall a good beer. I really liked the dark colour and big creamy head. FoolishMortal (990) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 29, 2005
Opaque black with a small sized dark tan foamy head. Banana ester and cocoa aromatics. Unsweetened chocolate nose, quickly followed by muted roast malt and banana ester characters. Milk chocolate finish. Mouthfeel is very smooth and rich.
