Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007. Brand acquired solely by Charles Wells in 2011. Recipe changed from dry hopping with Target to Goldings.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malts; Fuggle and Golding hops. Dry hopped with Golding hops.
Named after the Dorset Horn ram that lived in Youngs brewery stables in Wandsworth, and on which the company’s trademark is based.
“A pale brown, fruity, vinous, hoppy beer packed full of flavour. Full-bodied with an excellent balance between malt and hops.”

From old tasting notes. Bright orange gold color with a medium frothy beige head. Slightly tart fruity malt nose. Semi dry malty flavor upfront. Briny notes in middle. Light malty finish with bitter hops is quite satisfying and long on the palate. Well balanced and flavorful.

Clear golden with a medium white head. Aroma is some caramel and oxidized malts. Flavor is slight bittersweet some flowery hops, watery and with some cardboard short light aftertaste. Medium to light palate, nothing remarkable and a bit tired.

Bottle from Tesco. Pours Orange-Brown, single finger head. Aroma of malt, slight port, caramel musty, fruits, lemon, orange. Tastes much the same, hoppy fruits, but the malts take over for me. Decently balanced, nice and smooth.

Fairly slight aroma. Very bitter tasting with a real tingle in the tongue. Dark amber color and really clear in appearance. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

16.9oz bottle (Old Notes)-Pours an orangish brown with a decent sized head. Aroma of malt, caramel, and sweetness. Taste of the same. This light to medium bodied brew is well balanced and goes down smooth.

275 ml (is that all?) bottle at the Prince of Wales, Bromham. Copper colour, little obvious carb or head. Enjoyable caramel malt scent marred by a metallic hint in the aroma. Taste a bit metallic as well, but also bittersweet and well-balanced. Carbonation more obvious in the mouthfeel. Passable, but maybe not the best bottle? I prefer the cask (although I haven’t seen it in 7 or 8 years).

Bottle in The Bear, Esher. Colour is standard clear amber, medium white head. Nose is caramel, bread, cereal grainy, slight English hop earthiness. Taste is caramel, cereal malt grainy, dryish hop character, touch straw or grass hop character alongside earthiness.
