Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007. Brand acquired solely by Charles Wells in 2011.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

I was surprised to find this one at my local liquor store, nestled amongst the cheap domestics like Milwaukee’s Best and Busch Light. It was nearly two months past its best by date, but that didn’t prevent me from buying and throughly enjoying this beer! Next time I’ll have to find one that hasn’t peaked yet. I’m terribly curious to taste how good this beer is intended to be.

Bottle. Bottled exactly 4 years ago! Still drinkable. Light copper, clear. Slight carbonation. Aroma delicate, floral, malty. Quite sweet, slightly sour. Malty. Bitterness stealthy and nice, provides a good lingering finish. Good mouthfeel. Too sweet for me, but quite drinkable nevertheless.

Bottle. Light amber colour, large head that stays quite long, decent lacing. Aroma is clean malt, herbal hops, a bit of citrus. Medium bitterness. Well balanced, good one.

50cl bottle from local Alko, Viikki. This rather adventurous brew reminds me of saying: “"One person with passion is better than forty people merely interested." -E. M. Forster. Not my style, but still an enjoyable beer.

Light amber pour with malt nose. Very pleasant light to mid crystal malt flavours throughout. Somewhat light spicy finish. Can’t see where the 6.4% is. Tastes of a fairly straight and typical caramel malt English ale with slight marzipan and Christmas cake spice. Pleasant but not outstanding.

(Bottle) Pours clear amber brown with small white head. Pleasant aroma of caramel and bread. Medium body with good carbonation. Nice balance of flavours - some tartness balances some light caramel malty sweetness with some pleasant bitterness that develops later. Very drinkable, but not exceptional.

Light caramel aroma. Light taste of caramel, raisins. Pretty much that’s all. Where is the "powerful spicy hop finish"? Another tasteless British Ale.
