Hallertau hops and Bavarian-style top-fermenting yeast deliver a thick, creamy head with overtones of banana and clove esters. This authentic German weizen style beer, with a slight hazy appearance, concludes with a crisp finish.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a weizen glass. It was difficult to decipher the freshness code. It cost $2.25 ($0.19 per ounce).

Appearance: Hazy body over an orange/gold hue with spastic effervescence immediately visible. Pours to a two-finger, white foamy head which mostly dissipates and leaves little lacing.

Smell: Traditional Bavarian-style hefeweizen aroma of banana and clove, but not as pungent as most.

Taste: Now that Yuengling is a real craft brewery according to the Brewers Association, its time to hold them to the same standards as everyone else. Youd think the oldest brewery in American with German ancestry would make a lot more German-style beers than just adjunct lagers, so its nice to see them taking their hand at a hefeweizen. And while this is definitely a beer that conforms to the style, its not exactly the best example of the style as it seems deliberately mild. Thats okay, because the average Yuengling drinker probably expects and wants mild.

Yuengling Summer Wheat has all the makings of an Old World style wheat beer: banana, clove, and wheat all dominate the palette. Its actually a little juicy-tasting on the first half, though theres a slight tanginess or astringency on the second half. Thats common in many wheat beers, but usually when theyre old. Otherwise, this beer is rather unremarkable for better or worse. I enjoyed the taste, but it didnt amaze me. I think a few tweaks and it would be even better.

Drinkability: Theres one thing you want in a summer beer: easy drinkability, and you get that here. Yuengling Summer Wheat has a slightly thin mouthfeel with a slightly watery texture. Its crisp at first, but calms down quickly to the point of being flat by the end. Still, its always smooth and refreshing while in the mouth. Im not sure of the ABV because Yuengling, for some strange reason, never puts that information on the bottles nor on their website. Id estimate it around 5% ABV, possibly even lower as it certainly seem sessionable.

12oz bottle from jcwatts. Poured a slightly cloudy golden orange with a smaller to average foamy white head. Aroma is really nice, yeast, over ripe banana, bubble gum, cloves, corriander, wet dough. Flavor of rotten banana, clove, corriander, old wheat dough, yeast, bubble gum. Medium to fuller body, cresmy mouthfeel, softer carbonation, spicy aftertaste. I like this a lot, sadly Ed5388 said it sucked so I dumped half the bottle before trying it since its rating night.

Nice aroma of bubble gum, some spices and a hint of orannge citrus. Golden orange in color...white head disapears quickly. Fist taste is sweet wheat with a chalky consistency. Spices peak though but quicly overtaking by overly strong bubble gum flavor. Fisnishes with more bubble gum and a slick mouth feel. Not bad.

Bottle at home. Pours hazy orange with a small, frothy white head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is spicy wheat malt, moderate banana esters and light bubble gum. Flavor is spicy and prickly wheat malt, light lemon notes, earthy hops and medium bitterness, banana esters with a dry finish. Light body and moderate carbonation.

The aroma is yeasty and wheaty. The appearance is golden. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is smooth. Overall a pretty middle of the line beer.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Thanks to jcwattsrugger for the trade. Pale yellow pour with a huge head and a slight haze. Lively carbonation. Aroma of light wheat, pale malts, and crisp clean hops. The body is light and refreshing. The taste does bring out that wheat character along with toasted pale malts and a clean finish. An easy to drink Hefeweizen.

The overwelming taste here is of bananas and cloves, which is basically correct for a hefeweizen. Theres definitely wheat in this thing. The backing beer is kind of a thin gruel, but Im surprised. I dont really like the way Dick Yuengling runs things at his plant or the things he mouths off about to the newspapers, so I was prepared to not buy this and then run it down if I somehow got a free beer to try at a gathering of some sort. Two things happened, though. First, the beer went on sale at like a buck less a 6-pack than Budweiser- give me a psuedo-craft seasonal beer at that price and Ill buy it every time, issues with the owner of the brewery and his union-busting tactics and whining about taxes he should be paying more of and not less of be damned. And then, you know, it tastes better than I expected, and I want to be fair if Im going to review the thing. The Bock (late winter/early spring seasonal) is good, too. So far their Oktoberfest is their only seasonal "washout". I make an exception from my semi-boycott of Yuengling to buy a 6er or two of the Bock each year, and I might make one for this, too, if it goes on sale again. The funny thing is, no one is really making a decent priced summer Hefeweizen anymore thats widely available. Seriously. So many people have switched over to those shandies and generic wheat beers with fruit and such as their summer seasonals that this is the first time Ive had a truly decent hefe with the right flavor to it in years. Dick Yuengling should be careful, lower the regular price a buck or two to the sale price and hell force all of us Democrats to start drinking his beer. ;) A stronger tasting Oktoberfest and a good winter seasonal to follow, added to the Bock and Summer Wheat, and hell have a pretty good lineup of seasonals, too. Could he at least stamp a *year* on the bottle labels for the seasonals if hes not going to do a real bottled on or freshest by date for his line of beers, though? Its pretty much the industry standard now. Hes behind the macros hes competing with in terms of dating his products, as well as the craft brewing seasonal lines like Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada that these are probably supposed to be competing with.
