COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Stodgy is old-fashioned unduly formal and traditional, robust in food. So-old its seen again with fresh eyes as new again. This German beer style is much older and traditional than even Lagers. What all beers must have tasted like before modern times. Its character is a hybrid of ale, lagers a pleasant match of the best of both styles. Great Everyday brown Alt, like so many from the Ruhr valley. Hopped aggressively like a pale ale, brown in color.

Sampled at the ’12 Columbe Microbrew Festival. Deep amber color with a sticky, frothy ivory colored head. Nose of raw wet malted grain. Caramel and brown sugar sweetness with grainy bread, iced tea, and some grassy hops. Not really what I think of as a brown ale but an okay beer.

Draft sample. Poured clear brown color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate roasted malt and earthy hop aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and soft carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

Sample from growler. The beer is a clear brownish-amber color with a medium light beige head that dissipates steadily to a film. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of bready malt and hops. Light body with a roasty malt character and notes of mildly bitter herbal hops and caramel. The finish is moderately bitter hops up front with a malty aftertaste. Above average overall.
