Clear medium yellow orange color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white to off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, grain, toasted, malty, soil turned - damp stained, fruity, earthy. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate damp stained - fruity fresh bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. 
Herber Hopfenantrunk, wobei der Hopfen ab dem Mittelteil aromatische Noten verstreut, eine deutliche Bitterkeit ist immer dabei. Vollmundig, sehr harmonisch, zum Ende auch würziger. Nett! Bov (12636) - Bienne, SWITZERLAND - APR 3, 2014

(bottle) Clear, pale golden colour with a nice visible carbonation and a big and dense foamy white head. Herbal and moderately grassy hops aroma with a slightly malty sweetness and a touch of acidity. Draught at the brewpub. Clear golden colour. Big stable white head. The flavour starts off with a hint of smoke. Quite mild, but nice enough. There seems to be a hint of bread or perhaps barnyard, but that might just be the smoke. The landlord says there is no smoke malt in there, though.

Draft @ Brauerei Zenglein, Nov. 2015: Dim golden. Foamy, nonuniform white head. Fresh Spalter-like hop aromas of candied fennel, pepper, grass, hopsack, with underlying mineral, toasty pils malt and hay. Hints of metal and paper, as well. Slightly prickly carbonation. Limp body. Nice medley of spicy, peppery hops and minerals tempered by softer fresh-hay notes. An odd fruity twang negatively affects the body’s snappiness, as do metallic notes. The hops are one-dimensional, although they do exhibit a pleasant lemony juiciness which contrasts with the strong minerals. Prominent candyish yeast and fennel seed accents precede a curiously hushed bitterness in the lifelessly malty finish. Hints of metal linger. Sad that this beer has allegedly slipped so much in quality over the years, as now it’s merely decent. Not as poor as their zwickelbier, though. 3fourths (9347) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - APR 5, 2015
UPDATED: JUN 7, 2016 Draft at the brewery in Oberaurach. Lasting foamy white head atop a clear gold body that is just a tad darker than you usually find in Pils. Malty aroma shows the purity of Pilsner malt like few others do: cereal grain, baked baguette, warm-from-the-oven crackers with touches of honey. There’s the quietest suggestion of minerals / mineral water, and while at first the hop aromatics seem mild, they eventually unfold as apricot and herbs and cracked pepper and lemon, and integrate well with the fragrant malt as it approaches room temperature. Medium body, rich and filling in the mouth with low sweetness and moderate to high bitterness, the flavor balance is lovely and the ingredient expression is solid, hops are enjoyably oily-juicy, malt is pure, and fermentation clean. I understand Zenglein no longer makes this themselves, it’s contracted to Göller in Zeil am Main, but considering taste only, it’s very good, proving again that it’s not the company as much as the individual doing the work. It’s rare to find this character in a Pils (even in Franconia), it’s an incredibly drinkable, malt-driven, spicy, hoppy, succulent lager that does everything right. So darn clean and so darn malty. I originally scored this at 4.4 (!) so I had to go back a few days later to make sure I wasn’t fooling myself or caught in a strange moment of love. It’s not as good as the first try, the body seems just a tad edgy, and the expression seems milder in the mouth and retronasal. And while the aroma isn’t LOUD, it nicely encapsulates what you want from German malt and hops. I would fairly say that this is better than 90% of Pils in Germany, and one of the best smelling Pils overall. (4.0)

Re-rated November 2015 and it’s a shadow of its former self: still hoppy in the way of lemon-pepper, but it’s noticeably metallic, the body is rougher, and the malt is very simple caramel. Such is life. (3.1)
UPDATED: JUN 2, 2005 Brewery tap. Hoppy, soapy aroma. Malty hoppy flavor with a distinct barnyard character. Long hopbitter aftertaste. Another rural beer you’ll never find in industrial breweries, but mainly in rural Franconian Brauerei-Gasthäuser.

0.5 l bottle. Golden color with small head. Refreshing and malty aroma with flowery-herbal hops. Dryish, malty and honeyish flavor with notes of minerals, flowery hops and honey. Fairly light bodied.
