Vom Faß beim Zenglein in Oberschleichach. Etwas ruppig bitterer Abgang. - Unterdurchschnittliches Frankenlager, zu dünn und lieblos gehopft. Enttäuschend.

TAR (2742) - Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA - APR 18, 2017
Draft at the defunct brewpub in Oberaurach in Mar. 2015: Jagged sodalike head. Dark amber with curiously no yeast haze. Very dull and lifeless aroma of paper, caramel, cardboard, toffee and a hint of grape. Pointy and gassy carbonation. Limp and caramelly on entry, with spent tealeaves exacerbating the weak malt structure. Malt is mostly buried by curiously high sugar levels. Not much depth or detail to the grain. Fairly unclean, with hints of grape and a metallic twang creeping in late. Sweet and dull finish is comprised of caramel, hay and even a trace of oxidation. Nonexistent hop bitterness allows the sugars to continue unabated. A soulless beer with no bright notes to be found, as much I searched and searched for them.

3fourths (9332) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAR 31, 2015
UPDATED: NOV 20, 2015 Draft at the defunct brewery in Oberaurach. Hazy brown body with a medium-sized off-white head. Malty aroma impression is cereals and nutty baked bread crust with some softer touches that remind of apple bake and honey-coated pastries. The yeast in the nose is minimal, giving it a fresh liveliness, while aroma hops show faint floral touches of apricot. There’s a minute amount of buttery diacetyl in the nose when it reaches room temperature but it doesn’t show in the texture. Medium body, rich and filling, flavor impression is malty and crusty and nutty and apple-like. It’s sweet but well supported by carbonation and hop bitterness, the body is long-lasting and savory and just a little bit chewy. Fragrant and lively and bready with just enough apricot-citrus hoppiness to elevate the experience. It’s a little too cloudy for my liking, but it’s just a matter of aesthetics as the aroma and flavor and mouth feel seem unaffected by the amount of yeast in suspension. Unique, rustic, flavorful malty dunkles zwickelbier. (here is that zesty citrus / acid yeastiness that you talked about Joe). (3.5)

Retired in November 2015 and like the Pils this one is nothing like the year before: very basic caramel malt profile, no yeastiness, no hoppiness, and it’s papery. (2.7)

Koelschtrinker (20242) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - MAY 1, 2011
Hopfiger, stark karbonisierter Antrunk. Passend ist die milde Bitterkeit, die sonst die Süße verdecken würde. Im Mittelteil grasig, der Hopfen ist das Hauptaroma, gefolgt von einer würzigen, fast etwas rauchig wirkenden Malzigkeit. Bitterer Abgang.

Bottled (BB 12/2009)
Hazy yellow color, huge cloudy white head, lace. Orange-citrus, a bit sweet, yeasty nose. Lot of farmhouse in the flavor: fruityness, leather, citrusy hops. Very barnyardish and farmhouse-stylish.

Draught @ Brauerei Zenglein, Pfarrer-Baumann-Str. 21-23, 97514 Oberaurach-Oberschleichach, Unterfranken/Bayern, Germany.

Unclear medium to dark yellow orange color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, grain, toasted, smoke - rubber notes, light to moderate hoppy, grass, acidic citrus, grapefruit notes. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet, light light acidic and moderate bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is creamy - oily, carbonation is soft. [20090705]

MiP (15650) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - MAY 11, 2009
Bottle, 5.0% bought at the brewpub. Cloudy orange colour. Big stable rocky off-white head. The flavour is mildly bitter with some rough, but good bread notes. Has a little smoke, like their pils, but pleasant.

omhper (24977) - Tyresö, SWEDEN - AUG 15, 2008
UPDATED: SEP 27, 2008 Draught at the brewpub. Cloudy yellow, rich head. Perfumy nose with grass underneath. Very soft with generously amounts of malt covered in thick layers of grassy, resiny hops and some minerals. Massive late bitterness. Realy good. I assume this is just an unfiltered version of the pils, but flavourwise it makes all the difference in the world.

MoritzF (9851) - Ottobrunn, GERMANY - AUG 4, 2007
(bottle, bought at the brewery) Hazy, yellow colour with a big foamy white head. Yeasty and herbal hoppy nose with a tinge of citrus and sweet grainy malt in the background. Bitter-sweet flavour; light to medium bodied with an almost crispy carbonation. Soft malty base with herbal hops and yeasty bitterness; dry bitter and hoppy finish with a light but balancing malty sweetness. Clean and rounded Zwickel.
